Wireless Internet ?

That means that you are riding on someone else's internet. They are paying for it. But, since it is not secured, you are able to use it.

Good or bad depends on your definitions for that.

However, you and your church should get some secuirty on your access point there. Or, someone else can borrow your bandwidth & maybe even access your computer. Similar issues at home.

I would say, 'it's bad for your neighbor', as it means he has an open wireless network.

If I left my AP open, I wouldn't care if my neighbors borrowed my connection- there's plenty to go around. But not everyone has good intentions when accessing an AP.

If you are wondering if it's ethical to borrow someone elses connection: The way I look at it, if your neighbors are broadcasting open radio signals into your home, and you stumble upon their open connection- it's no big deal. Unfortunately not everyone feels that way. Some call it bandwidth theft. Others go as extreme as to call it 'unauthorized access of a computer network', which is a felony here. Windows often auto connects to the best wireless signal it can find, so it's no big deal anyway.

If you get a good signal, and you know your neighbor well, ask them if it's ok if you can borrow it. Then you have fulfilled all your ethical and legal requirements to use it .

I would be afraid someone would download illegal music or worse, child porn, if I left my network open. The authorities would trace it to your IP if you own the access router.

 

Are you anywhere near a business. Many offer service. Burger Kings out here do, Coffee shops etc.

If only houses around it is probably one of the closer ones.

I have a Brand New Laptop Computer made by Hewlett Packard its a Compaq with an AMD 3300+ Processor 2Ghz and it has 2GBRAM and 80GB hard-drive space. I have wireless built into it also.

I use a Secure Wireless DSL Modem at home and it works Great. I had to set it up through my Connection. It was Very Easy, My computer automatically finds wireless connections no matter where I am. Just Be Very Careful when you use another Wireless Modem, its not as secure as my home DSL Modem!

 

Congrats on the new puter. Were you able to salvage all your stuff of the old one? Was it the harddrive or did you ever figure it out?

You can take your laptop around the house and watch the signal meter to see which direction it get's stronger or weaker. That will give you an idea of which direction the signal is coming from. You can walk up and down the street with your laptop and figure out who it is. The signal will be strongest in front of their house.

 

Pastor...I highly suggest you get your own secure network at home. DO NOT use someone else's connection. When I lived in the townhouse (this past summer) we were able to connect to a network from someone three houses down. It was a family that had teenagers.

Not sure how it happened but I went exploring on my laptop (which no one else uses) and it had horrible stuff on it. I thought maybe it was spyware and adware from where I would download games but my husbands laptop was being attacked by the same garbage. The only explanation was that it was coming from their connection...something they had to be viewing was filtering to our computers. I would be very careful!

My Laptop was bought about 3 months ago. I have a Brand New Computer Built by Hewlett Packard and its a Compaq with a 2.8Ghz Pentium D Dual Core Processor, 2GB RAM. It came with a Lightscribe DVD/RW CD/RW and 250GB hard-drive. I lost my Dell Computers mother board burned up. So, I took out my other hard-drives, and put them in my New Computer, I now have 450GB hard-drive space. I also installed my NEC DVD/RW CD/RW, and my brand new ATI TV Tuner Card. I have Windows XP Media Center 2005. I am so good with computers as I have been playing with them since the 1980s....

And seriously, that does happen.

A good friend of mine works for the FBI tracking down and prosecuting distributors and users of child porn. He, and other agents, have knocked down doors, confiscated computers and arrested people whom they eventually released because the person that actually committed the crime was simply using an innocent party's open network.

It usually gets straightened out pretty fast, but do you really want your house to get raided?

 

Are you kidding, rent a motel with wireless and its there for the use of anyone who is in distance to use it.

 

Just FYI for all concerned, it is really fine to use an open network.
It is no different that picking up someones CB signals.
You should still use common curtesy etc but simply using it since it is open is ok.
Now, if there is any sort of security and you try to break that, then you are in trouble.

I have had situations before with my iBook where it would just connect to a nearby AP or at least tell me it was there and ask me first.

There are many reasons not to use smeones open network (very valid ones) but I dont' think there is anything illegal about it.
