What a 3rd party and even a 4th party needs is a hand up and not a hand out , I believe this congress and its future if it stays centrist and progressive with mercy would be open to legislation that would give a hand up to a 3rd party and even a fourth..how would this be done ..electoral reform that gives
a grass roots movement more of a hand up and not a hand out.

A 3rd party that is fledgling would be able to survive better if the public had more control over the electoral process instead of big money and special interests.

So is it time for a 3rd and 4th party and do they need a hand up via electoral legislation or do you believe they can survive on their own without any help...recent history seems to center around a strong central figure usually with wealth that did not need a hand out...I know of one
Ross Perot but I would rather see the Congress help by making the playing field more even for fledgling groups.

request that the cynics take a break on this, looking for solutions on this and thinking outside the box.

The Republican and Democratic Parties will not do anything to help minor party and independent candidates unless they are dragged kicking and screaming to do so.

Only in isolated campaigns do they do so - Republicans might help a Green candidate get on the ballot because they think it will take votes away from a Democrat in a race and the Democrats might help a libertarian get on the ballot because they think it will take votes away from a Republican.

The Democrat and Republican Parties want power and they have no interest in sharing it with anyone else.

3rd party is not in the interest of the AARP or the NEA and therefore will not happen.

Nor is it in the interest of the 14.5+million government employees or the employees of countless corporations who profit off of gov't largesse.

No help is needed from the government to get a 3rd party. The solution is for people to stop supporting the democrats and republicans, then they will cease to exist.

    In a perfect world, right?

Do you have any practical solutions to this problem, because you know people are not going to stop supporting either the Democrats or the Republicans.

Would't it be great if decent and highly ethical politicians from the Republican Party and the The Democratic part split to form a third Party?
    Naahhh! It'll never happen.

After the 2006 elections I just don't see any hope for a minor party on a national level. The only way to accomplish anything on the national level outside of the two major parties is the Ross Perot method of self-financing.

    leveling the playing field.
generally asking the powerful to give up some power in order to give power to a weaker entity. The whole tenor of the treatise seemed socialistic to me.

Nothing wrong with a level playing feild. The problem is that both the Democratic and Republican Parties maintain an absolute power status and we all know that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Their hold on power is still at the whim of the voters. There is great danger in a Democracy, and we are at the point that it is begining to destroy us. The politicians are self servingly bound to seek re-election, and will offer up booty from the vast treasury in order to insure that end.
