Wolfowitz at the World Bank

Back when Paul Wolfowitz was nominated to head the World Bank, there was a discussion on the board where we were questioning whether he was the best choice for the position. I did a search, but cannot seem to find that discussion. Since then,

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18470869/

From the article:
Fighting to keep his job, World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz issued a rebuttal Thursday that blamed unclear bank rules for creating questions about his handling of hefty pay raises for his girlfriend.

So, if I understand him correctly, the unclear rules are to blame?
Hmmmmmm.......

Nope. He should step down, just like all us smart conservatives said , about two months ago, and we threw in a little liberal bashing, just to make it two pages long........

Wolfowitz is not a conservative, and it appears he will not "step down." That being the case, does it bother you that he won't?

Yeah, rub it in.
I am back home in Tampa, after a LONG business trip. Now it's back to the Commonwealth for the big celebration. It's next weekend, you know.

God's Blessings to you and your family,

I was talking about "us" conservatives. Those of us on this board. I didn't include Wolfie.

I said he should step own. But I have bigger things on my mind to be upset about, I suppose if it does bother some folks, they should turn up the heat on the guy. But it's not an issue I'm going to get worked up over.

I guess he never said he would restore integrity to the office though, did he?

All kidding aside, I remember having the discussion back when he was nominated, and I expressed my belief that Wolfowitz was a very bad choice. Unfortunately, it appears that I was correct.

Mother's day ? What celebration are we talking about ?

Shame on you, Bro. Curtis

I have my tickets, and I'll be there to participate in the big party. You and yours are most certainly invited!

Again, God's Blessings to you and yours,

Yes, and we even celebrate the fact that settlers in Virginia were here for one reason: to make money.

What would you have called a pacifist in Nazi Germany? A traitor I suppose.

SaN, I have no idea where your idiotic statement came from, and why you try and make people you don't like look bad, but I have talked with you enought to know that you are not worth talking to. This question, as all others from you, will go unanswered. Have a nice day.

Brother Curtis,
You scared me for a second. I thought that SaN stood for me. Sorry for the misunderstanding

The White House doesn't seem to think so.....

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18553053/

From the article:
White House press secretary Tony Snow on Wednesday sought to debunk any notion that President Bush’s support for Wolfowitz had weakened. “We still support him fully,” Snow said.
Snow on Tuesday had referred most questions about Wolfowitz’s future to the World Bank and to the Treasury Department. But on Wednesday Snow said that shouldn’t have been read as any wavering of support for Wolfowitz. “This is not hanging Paul Wolfowitz out to dry,” he said.

Amazing......

Apparently, the Administration disagrees with you.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aig8Q4CytIqs&refer=home

From the article:
A World Bank panel said President Paul Wolfowitz hurt the agency when he arranged a pay raise for his partner and questioned whether he should keep his job.
In response, U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson lobbied finance ministers today on the bank chief's behalf and argued that his mistakes aren't a firing offense. Paulson blamed the furor on a communications breakdown. [emphasis in bold is mine]

Also from the article:
Vice President Dick Cheney, who served with Wolfowitz in two administrations, also came to his defense today.
``Paul is one of the most faithful public servants I've ever known,'' Cheney said in an interview with Fox News in Aqaba, Jordan. ``I think he's a very good president of the World Bank, and I hope he will be able to continue.'' [emphasis in bold is mine]

"A very good president of the World Bank?"

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18665386/

From this article:
The Bush administration, meanwhile, has intensified efforts to win support for Wolfowitz and is reaching out to the other members of the Group of Seven countries — Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Canada. A conference call among the G7 countries is anticipated.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18588462/

From this article:
The White House, which had previously deferred questions over the matter to the U.S. Treasury, insisted on Wednesday it was not “hanging Paul Wolfowitz out to dry” and that he had the Bush administration’s strong support.
“We still support him fully,” White House spokesman Tony Snow told reporters on board Air Force One as he flew with Bush to visit parts of Kansas devastated by tornadoes last week.

Wolfowitz has their "strong support."

Wow.......

An AP article on MSNBC -

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18665386/

From the article:
“We have faith in Paul Wolfowitz,” White House spokesman Tony Snow said. He insisted that the charges against Wolfowitz are not “a firing offense.”
Only after the charges against Wolfowitz are resolved, he said, would it then be appropriate to consider the bank’s leadership going forward.
“Separately, at some point in the future there are going to be conversations about the proper stewardship of the World Bank,” Snow said. “In that sense ... all options are on the table.”
It was the first time that the White House indicated that it might be open to Wolfowitz’s departure. The overture could be viewed as an attempt to calm European allies who are clamoring for him to step aside. Promising future conversations, and separating them from the process of determining Wolfowitz’s fate based upon the pay package issue, could give those speaking against Wolfowitz the sense that their concerns will be addressed at some point.

Bye, bye, Mr. Wolfowitz.
:wavey:
I would've never thought it possible to do such a horribly bad job at managing the World Bank. Undoubtedly, he will turn up somewhere else in the Administration, or perhaps he will secure a fellowship at the Husdon Institute - with Scooter Libby.

The big question is who will be nominated by the Administration. Judging by the stellar performance of Mr. Wolfowitz, I can only imagine........

The best "take" on this subject thus far:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18729537/

From the link:
Some do not think he deserved this. The Wall Street Journal editorial page has said craven European governments opposed Wolfowitz's efforts to cleanse a corrupt and hidebound institution. [emphasis mine]

Can't..................stop......................LAUGHING.

This is further proof that the editorial page of the WSJ simply has no credibility.
