    I was looking for an American history timeline for our homeschool and came across a book from the library called "A Thousand Years Over A Hot Stove", by Laura Schenone. Not exactly what I was looking for, but I borrowed it for me. :D
    "A history of American Women told through food, recipes, and remembrances".
    It goes from the beginning of America to the 90's. It gives recipes on practically every other page, from ones the Indians used to ones adapted by newcomers from home recipes that had to use ingredients they could find in America, and moves on through the lifestyles and recipes of slaves, immigrants, recipes used in times of war, for religious festivals, and much more.
    The Aunt Jemima story is interesting, and accompanied by an ad used in the Staurday Evening Post in 1920. I wonder what she'll look like in a few more years? [​IMG]
    Get the book and read it! If you don't like following recipes word for word, it'll be fun to try to incorporate some of the things you read into your cooking style, while giving you a new appreciation for the foods you eat and cook with.

    LOL, Gina. You reminded me of one of my favorite and most cherished cookbooks - I've had it for nearly 40 years - Housekeeping in Old Virginia. I guess it was quite popular back in it's heyday, 1879. Needless to say, mine is the reprint, but only a few short years, it will be an antique, LOL.

    One of the delicious recipes contained therein: :eek:

    Pig's Head Pudding.
    Boil head and liver until perfectly done, cut up as for hash. Put it on again in warm water and season highly with butter, pepper, salt, and a little chopped onion.

    After well seasoned, put in a baking dish with one egg beaten light. Bake two hours, and lay over hard-boiled eggs sliced, and strips of pastry across the top.

    Calf's Head Pudding can be made in the same way. — Mrs. Col. S.


    It has household tips and medicinal remedies, too. About beating carpets, getting rid of lice, cure for the vapors, etc. Quite interesting.

    Gina, i would love to read such a book. it sounds like womans business all right. Any idea of the publisher and the year of publishment, so I can hassle my local library???

    Lady Eagle, your little book reminds me of Grandmas Bundabeberg CWA Cook book (Country Womens Association) circa 1920s. this amazing treasure of womans business has gems of recipes such as baked rabbit, fish head stew king Georges favourite teacake etc. The addendum has recipes for ridding the house of silverfish, improving the look of deal, albumin water for invalids and improving the yield of your chickens.

    The recipes measures are great reading, a goodly knob of lard, bake until done in a slow oven, a teacup of sugar etc.

    God Bless the memory of our pioneering women wherever they lived!
