Working Nights, a cause of cancer

Working nights also makes one goofy.

Officials are determining whether global warming or industrial wastes have something to do with this shocking statistic.

Legislation to reduce this number will be proposed in the House today.

 

I guess I am doomed.

 

I work 2:00pm to 12:00. Does that count?

My wife and I watched this same story on Fox news this morning. Since she had just gotten off her night shift it caught our attention.

Everyone in the study that worked the night shift was also taking rozerem or other sleep aids to help them sleep during the day. I think the cancer rates might be because of the sleeping pills more than anything else.

My wife has no trouble sleeping during the day. The old adage of "If you work hard enough during the day, then you won't have any trouble sleeping at night" works for night shift also. I realize that some people have medical conditions that make it difficult to sleep, but 10-12 hours of hard physical labor usually helps a lot.

 

The key to this is melatonin that suppresses tumors being produced mainly at night when one is sleeping.

 

Most people who work nights do physical factory WORK, not paper pushers. Factories have environmental problems.

 

Please edit your post. It caused cancer in lab rats.

You really think most night work is factory work? Medical workers, call centers (paper pushers) would seem to make up most 3rd shift work.

 

Glad for your wife that she has no problem. But if you ask firefighters, nursing home workers, truck drivers, police, corrections officers etc. who do the night shift thang, you'll find an awful lot of them do have trouble with being alert when the brain says you should be in bed.

No, sorry, that doesn't count.

OK, you correct about factory workers not the majority.

 

The article mentions very little about the habits people develop working night hours. Many night/3rd shift jobs are not continuously active-- hospital staff, security, hotel desk clerk, communications center, et al. So with idle time, we drink too much coffee, buy junkfood out of the machines, slouch in our chairs, go have a smoke. Other night workers that are more active deal with repairs, housekeeping, painting, et al, and have fumes, chemicals, and dust which can affect health of these workers plus the security, clerks, and communication operators who have to stay at our posts. This article ignored a few simple facts that can go a long way in explaining the situation.

 

Good points.

It always disturbs me to see healthcare workers smoke...and to see how many do. They gotta right to do it.....but after seeing what it does to folks....why would they?

 

I wonder if anyone ever thought about those who breathe polluted air in large cities due to coal plants and cars?
