World Series

    Who do you like in the World Series, or, as my sister once called it, the World Serious?

    I didn't pick the Phillies to beat the Dodgers because of their starting pitchers not named Cole Hamels. But, if a subpar Josh Beckett can shutdown the Rays hitters, then I don't see why Brett "Boom. Outta Here." Myers can't do the same (yes, I know he's not Beckett, work with me here). Overall, I think the Rays have the better starting pitching, and the difference between this team, and say, last year's team, is their bullpen. I think the Rays have a strong edge in pitching, which is the main reason they've made it this far.

    On offense, I give the Phillies an edge. This is mostly because after destroying Sox pitching in games 3, 4 and 5, the Sox virtually shut them down in games 6 and 7. I think the Phils pitchers look at what Boston did to Tampa in those 2 games and follow the same game plan.

    The Phillies have a look of determination about them. Monday morning after a Sunday night game isn't the time to see whether Tampa's just happy to have made it to the WS or not, but I give the Phils an edge because of the sense of purpose they exude.

    I think Philly's starting pitching will be good enough.
    I think Philly's offense is better than the Rays' offense.
    I think Philly has a sense of purpose and determination about them.
    Thus, I like the Phillies to win the World Series in 6 games.

    The determination of which you speak is all over this town. It's in the air, wafting over the grilling cheesesteaks and over the clock tower of Independence Hall. The team won't really even speak of it, though, just saying "We've got one more step to go." For this and all the reasons mentioned, I'm saying it too. Maybe not in 4, but I don't think it will take 7.

    As for those Yankees, that's such as shame. NOT!

    Go Phillies!!!

    Against the Dodgers, the Phillies best players did their job, but there were the unexpected heroes who stepped up when they were needed who won the series. Charlie Manual has the guys playing like a team. I have not even seen the TB Rays play a game, but the Phillies who are greater than the sum of their parts are my pick.

    Rays down one after one. But it was a good game to listen to as I was driving.

    Rays were jobbed last night. With a competent umpire behind the plate, the Rays win that game 2-1. Before Utley hit his 2-run homer, he struck out on a 0-2 pitch that the incompetent umpire called a ball.

    Phillies were fortunate to have Hamels on the mound last night. Leaving 11 batters stranded is not the path to multiple victories in this series. But, Philly keeps doing what they need to do to win. With Brett Myers on the mound tonight, an early lead by the Phillies would do wonders for Brett's psyche.

    You're right, Andy. That was such an egregious call, especially coming when it did, when the Rays only had 27 more outs to work with to make up for it. I didn't see the call, so I can't say whether it was a good call or not, but one call in the 1st inning cost the Rays the game? Please. You can't make the assumption that the entire game would have played out exactly the same way if Utley had been called out on strikes.

    Overheard in the Phillies locker room after the game:

    Bats, they are sick. I cannot hit curveball. Straightball, I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. I ask Jobu to come, take fear from bats. I offer him cigar, rum. He will come.

    Doesn't matter anymore; the Rays are winning this thing, even if Hammels gets to start three games.

    Interesting stats: The Rays did not have a .300 hitter nor a 15-game winner this season. I wonder how many teams have won the W.S. (or even made it to the W.S.) without a .300 hitter nor a 15-game winner? I bet not many, if ever. They also didn't have anyone with 100 runs scored, and they barely had a 100-RBI guy (Pena had 102). Even their "clutch stats" like RISP, etc. are not that great. They were 13th in team batting average, but 4th in team OBP. They led the league in stolen bases but were also caught stealing the most.

    I guess the nicest thing I could say about last night's game is that if the Phillies were favored with bad calls in the first game, the score was evened with bad calls favoring the Rays last night. The photo of Myers holding his hands out going "What?" said it all.

    My boy Chase did the best he could. But you can't win a game by yourself.

    Andy,

    Where's your rant about the bad umpiring in Game 2 that went against the Phillies? That was a terrible piece of umpiring on Baldelli in the 2nd.

    Only watched about 5 minutes of the game last night, so I can't comment on the umps. If it evened out, then that's great. But that home plate ump in game 1 was awful (not just the Utley pitch - there were others).

    The World Series is part of the baseball playoff where the champions from the American League and the National League play each other to determine the champion. I explain this because I see you're a Cleveland fan and thus have no concept of the idea :laugh:

    Kidding...tonight I'll feel the same way because Tennessee plays our archrival, that state beneath us (in more ways than one).
