Can you believe that they are actually considering not rebuilding on that site? If they follow through with 1 of the 6 plans that they are entertaining, that means that the terrorist, WON.

I believe that the Twin Towers need to be rebuilt, only taller and better in honor of those that were massacred.

This would send a statement that we will not surcome to these infidels.

    My opinion! [IMG]

They can still put a memorial in the middle of or in the lobbies of the buildings.

I thought the same thing until I read the story in full. The fact is, many of the families are opposed to building in the foot prints of the original buildings. They consider them as a sacred site, (like a ship wreck I suppose).

I really don't agree with this anology, but I think this is the reason why only 2 proposals recommend rebuiling on the original site.

    Warm Christian greetings!

Wouldn't it be better to build a memorial park on the site. Relatives can visit and, perhaps, have an oasis of calm in a busy city.

    Kind regards

    In my opinion:

I don't mean to sound cold.

That is one of the reasons for cementaries. The dead have their memorials there. Relatives and friend can go there and honor the dead. Though we know that the body in the grave is nothing, because their eternity is already sealed.

The dead are no longer at this site. Technically they are either in their grave or in the Staten Island landfill.

They can always put a memorial in the lobby(s), a corner stone, a perimeter around the new buildings, or a multitude os other viable solutions for those that would want a memorial.

Why remember where the killings took place. You go to the cemetary to remember the pleasent things, not the gruesome.

With this philosophy, the whole world will shortly be a memorial for the dead.

Hum, since the former site was owned & managed by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, they do have some say in rebuilding the area. As I understand it, the available architectural plans so far did not fit the established criteria by the powers to be. I believe, one of the major hindrances, of rebuilding the towers as high or even higher as they were, is something to do with its marketability. Based on the slow exodus of major companies from the NYC area, since 9/11, it will take more than simply a tax incentive to attract businesses into a building with 90 plus floors. Especially if the engineering technique, in piling the floors on top of each other, will be the same as the ill fated twin towers were. :(

    Barnabas,

With the new technological advances in building materials, electronics and fire extinguishing, we are not talking about the same buildings that were there.

The exodus that you mentioned is also attributed to the state of the financial market.

And history has proved with the building of these buildings now and then, That they were mostly built when the chips were down, so to speak.

New York City is a magnet for businesses under the right circumstances. It is known as one of the more resilient cities and always seems to bounce back. [IMG]

Time will tell, time will tell Justified. One thing I know, it will never be the same again. It may be better, but never be the same. [IMG]

Recently, in New York, spot lights were shining in the air as a memorial of the trade center disaster for all to see. Relatives to the victims opposed the lights because the memories were too painful. The lights were stopped. People have been coming from all over the U.S. to see the distruction. Some are related to the victims, many acquaintances, others just wanting to experience the magnitude. How is a memorial really looked at?
Also, Central park is there for oasis of calm in a busy city.

Thank you Olive, I forgot about that.

I also have to ask each and every one of you that thinks that this area should be made a memerial:

    1) If it was you that were killed in something like this, would YOU really want a memerial erected for you?

    2) Or would you rather have the buildings built bigger and better? ;)

    HONESTLY

I caught a glimpse of a news program that showed someone's idea of putting the buildings back and it looked really nice; the 'skyline' was normal again. It was comforting to look at~so I vote bigger and better(stronger)with some type of remembrance, maybe. If a bomb/fire/flood/wind wiped out a city, they'd rebuild it, wouldn't they?

Now imagine if we built the buildings in the same spot, at an enormous cost, we got business to move into them, and after all that had another terrorist decide to ram into them again? Where would we be then?

By rebuilding the twin towers we would be rubbing salt into the Talibans wounds and they or someone in their network of terrorism would be likely to go after it again. However, if we build a memorial...what good is going to do to run into a memorial?

    Just my opinion though

And I truly believe we should honor the victims and victims families wishes. They were the ones who paid the price of terrorism most directly.

    Bro Adam,

I think you need to read Olive's post. It's about 5 or 6 above this one.

And that means if it were you that you would want a memerial built to you?

And also, do you seriously think that it will be that easy for this to happen again? Should we stop ALL building of faucilities that can encompass thousands of peoples and live in fear the rest of our lives?

We now have evidence that they had the Sears Tower, Golden Gate Bridge, Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, The Arc of ST. Louis, and on and on. Does that mean that we should not build any more bridges? After all, look how may people are on these bridges at any given time. Or Lady Liberty, if that were detroyed, we shouldn't rebuild it?

Justified, I think you are letting your feelings guide you here.

TheOliveBranch didn't provide any links to back up what they said, also, what percentage of the relatives were upset by the lights? Also, how does this "memorial" dictate how the victims and victims family would feel about a different memorial?

Now I never said that did I? I said I don't feel we should rebuild the twin towers. I never said we shouldn't rebuild in that vicinity, nor did I say anything about developing the economy through building in general. I merely believe rebuilding the same building in the same spot would be a bad idea. And that is also just my opinion, so I could be wrong. It might be the perfect thing to do.

Finally there is a huge difference between the statue of liberty and the twin towers. The economic and impact on human lives would be by far smaller if they attacked that.

I thought the spotlights looked too gaudyish or "hollywood" & maybe that is why it upset the people. There was an old home on the road into town and I dearly loved it, as it reminded me of something in my past of long ago; when they tore it down, I was heartsick, but to my surprise, they rebuilt it almost identical, only it was updated...I think to rebuild the towers would bring comfort, as opposed to looking at the blank space there now. It's sad to see old postcards of the towers & see it today & then realize what happened. But I do think some kind of plaque or memorial-wall would be appropriate...

I view the people that were killed on 9/11 as casualties of war. Why is it wrong to honor those people who gave there lives in this act of aggression? There are memorials for holocaust victims... Is this so much different? do we really want to sweep this under the rug and pretend that it never happened?

Why does the World Trade Center have to be rebuilt in the image of what it once was? I don't believe that duplicating the twin towers or making them taller will be proving anything. The country that did this terrible terrorist act believes that all American's are evil and deserve to die and that they will secure there place in Heaven if they kill us. Why do you want to prove anything to them?

As far as I'm concerned, rebuilding the Twin Towers exactly like they once were is in a way pretending that nothing happened.

Granny, as usual, words of wisdom from your keyboard. [IMG]
    ************************************************

I was never a fan of New York City/Manhattan, until I came out to the east coast and saw it for myself. For those of you that have never seen New York City for yourself, you don't know what your missing. I came out here on Sept 10th at night, and the sight from my hotel room was a sight to behold!

The next morning I got up and the sky was clear, and the sun was shining in all its glory, and the view was breathtaking. The Towers standing there in their majestic sort of way over Manhattan. It was beautiful!

I drove to my meeting in downtown Newark, New Jersey, and as I pulled into the parking lot across the river from Manhattan, the first plane hit. We watched in horror. Well, you all know the rest of the story. The point being, it's just not New York anymore! It's not the same without her land marks and her distinctive skyline.

And anything less would be insulting to the victims of 9/11, and to the city herself!
    ************************************************

rsr, do you mean "WHERE are you going here? :D LOL
