Worship Service

    State the flow/pattern of your worship service.
    How long is the service?
    How long is the preaching?
    Are you happy with the service, if not what would you modify.

    Mine:
    *
    -Prelude-Keyboard
    -Welcome, Call to Worship (from Scripture) and invocation
    - congregational singing ( 1 hymn and 1 scripture based chorus)
    - Scripture Reading (mostly responsive)
    -Praise and Prayer Time (sharing joys and concerns)
    -Prayer (silent then pastoral)
    - congregational hymn (related to message)
    -preaching
    - prayer of dedication
    - congregational hymn
    -benediction

    Total service = 65/70 minutes
    preaching = approx. 35 minutes

    * The Lord's Supper and the offering are taken before the 'worship' service. This is a holdover from the church not having a pastor and worship services. Communion and the offering followed Sunday School. I'm not comfortable with this but as I am only providing pulpit supply and it's not my home congregation I don't feel led to stir things up by suggesting a change. I just enjoy sharing the Word.

    This is the service of the church that I currently attend and is very similar to the service at the church to which I have been called. I like it well enough occasionally it can be overly repetative but repetition is good. Depending on the events or length of certain parts some parts may be eliminated on any given Sunday except Confession and Absolution, Gospel reading, Lord's Supper, and the prayers.

    Prelude
    greeting
    Hymn
    Invocation
    Responsive Reading (usually a psalm)
    Confession and Absolution
    Hymn of response
    Old Testament Reading
    sung response (sometimes choir)
    Epistle Reading
    sung response (sometimes choir)
    Gospel Reading
    Sermon hymn
    Sermon
    collection of offering
    hymn refrain
    prayers of the Church
    Lord's prayer
    Holy Communion
    Benediction
    Closing hymn

    Service takes ~60-70 minutes
    Preaching depends on who is preaching. If it is me preaching than 15-22 minutes. If it is the senior pastor 20-27 minutes. Holy Communion occurs on the 1st and 3rd Sunday.

    Yeah, I know...just using common lingo to ask the question. Feel free to substitute 'Bible Study Hour' or some other designation. However, I'm not intereset in "Mass".

    At least in the NT Greek worship is basically two words: proskuneo and latreo (sorry no Greek fonts).
    They express both worship as adoration and service.

    Maybe you could start another thread to pose this question.

    I'm trying to see how churches have adapted their 'meeting' times to the patterns and principles revealed in Scripture.

    I think that it comes about by we are there to worship God, not to service a ritual as in other faiths.
