Worship

Jude shouldn't it be in word, song and deed and also in spirit and in truth? This popped in mind when I read your post.

Col. 3:17 -
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

John 4:23 -
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

The focus of our worship should be on Christ and Him crucified. Those churches that retain the historic liturgy have kept the focus on Christ (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, etc.). But many contemporary services focus on our response to Christ. For example, hymns about what we have done for Christ rather than what He has done for us.

 

I think it should include worship in singing, worship in prayer, worship in communion (Lord's Supper), worship by growing in our understanding of his Word, and Worship in our fellowship with other Christians...

I'm actually not sure if I've ever been to a church that really balances them all out as well as I'd like...

I can't stand Catholicism (and Mass) because it's all about the liturgy and Eucharist....

I guess the closest I've seen to a balance is perhaps a Lutheran church, but I still find a little bit much on the liturgy side for me.

I attend a church that spends a lot of time talking about the Word of God and its application to our life. We also sing (as a congregation) and have a great group of musicians and singers who perform solos in praise of God. Extensive use of multi-media (video, audio) and drama (play-acting) to illustrate the Word's relevance to our lives is used. It's a great way to reach out to people. Our church went from zero to 10,000 members and 12,000 weekly attendance in 11 years. I'm a new member myself (11 years ago I was just graduating high school and didn't even live within 80 miles of the church).

I guess the point is that there are many ways of worship. Some find certain methods to be not fitting to their personalities. That's a big part of the reason for different denominations....

I don't care for excessive liturgy, I don't believe in speaking on tongues in modern times, I don't believe in laying-on-of-hands in modern times...

but I do wish my church did weekly or semi-weekly Lord's Supper....

No. I'm a new member of a 10,000 member church I don't have any weight there. They actually offer the Lord's Supper every week after the service for those who wish to partake of it, but I would rather it just be a part of the service.

Anyway.... To me the singing and "preaching" are what church is... I guess it comes down to what you're used to and what you like. I haven't been to an Episcopalian church, but I assume it isn't too unlike Catholic or Lutheran, so it's a little on the liturgical side for me.

It seems like people are "mourning" rather than worshipping.

Biblical model for true worship is 24/7/52 as far as I know...(24hrs a day, 7 days a week, 52 ...you get the idea )

....Good tricky question. In every area of worship there is the danger of it turning into "religion"...or perhaps "habit" is the word I'm looking for there. Of course I have no problem with Communion/Lord's Supper done every Sunday, and even through the week at home, as long as it is not just going through the motions.
