Would this be more effective on the phone?

I had a interesting experience this past week that made me wonder if our mode of communication might be hindering us.

I "debated" and "discussed" the issues of Calvinism/Arminianism with a relative over a two year period via email. Much of the same arguments and issues were raised in our discussion as we see on this board regularly. I finally got tired of it and call him on the phone. In an hour he came to at least understand and respect my perspective. After two days of studying it he emailed me some questions and I called him back. We talked for another hour or so. He still had a lot of issues, but within a week he emailed me and said, "You know, you may be right about this after all. It seems so much more clear now."

Now, lest I receive the wrath of those who oppose my point of view, I also recall being much more effective when I was still a Calvinist talking with someone one on one. I just wonder how much is hindered in communication on a message board versus phone conversations and one on one visits?

I bring this up because I think there are some who come to this board who are really searching for answers and want to view these issues objectively. I just wonder how much this really helps as compared to a simple phone call. All that to say if you are here and want to really understand another perspective I wouldn't mind talking about it on the phone. Send me a PM.

I prefer this board. I think it's more open, balanced, ... Maybe is not that effective to persuade one-to-one. But i think the purpouse of this board is not persuade or win each other but give us the motivation to go deeper in our own study.

Instead of convincing me, i prefer to read debates, read different point of views and by my own bible study have a conclusion.

And I think it's better for your friend to read/listen the opinion of another Christian that will have solid arguments as well for calvinism point of view. Belive me, the opinion of an another person on cal will make the same effect as your explanation.

If cal-non cal doctrine is as easy as a phone call, then why do we have houndreds on years on this debate?

I hope you know that is not what I was saying. Actually your response proves my point. It is easy to misunderstand the tone and intent of a written response. Any one who does business using email has experienced this. People read a tone or attitude that may or may not be intended.

My point was not to say that a phone call could solve the difficult debates of the world, but just that they seem to be much more effective in getting across a point and helping someone understand a perspective. Believe me, my friend has more than enough Calvinistic influences...if you only knew.

I'm just saying that I think people would be kinder, more ready to listen and understand and less competitive and rude if we were all in the room together or even on the phone. That in and of itself would lend it self to much more productivity...IMO
