For what it is worth, I agree with you.

 

Wouldn't happen in Alaska either. North Pole physically dominated everyone last year. The entire offensive line was drafted lock, stock, and barrel. Down here on the Kenai Peninsula, the local school (which is the smallest) was the only school that was even able to score on them. Ketchikan lost 64-0, and it would have been much worse except for the mercy rule.

Actually, here in Texas the question would never be asked.

Frankly, there should be sufficient flexibility to provide a competitive environment without ruining a competitive spirit.

 

This gives reason for six, seven, eight and nine -man football to be played by smaller schools. I am saddened to see eight-man not played in KY's smaller schools, I don't think it's played much anymore, but it used to be, with three or four districts, and its own championships. Seven-man football is usually 'flag football', however. Six-Man is fairly common in small schools in Texas and a couple of other places.

I don't see this as a north v. south issue. Seems like a bad idea to me. Handling loss is probably more important a skill to master than how we handle victory.

 

Our school is supposedly the smallest high school in North Carolina that fields a football team. There are actually two schools in our area that do not play football. Shoot, this school in Michigan had 530 students, we only have 250. Every week I see our kids beaten physically and some of the losses are by ridiculous margins. Yet every week I see those same boys out there fighting and playing for honor if nothing else.

We do have some injuries. We have a lot of boys playing both ways and they get weak physically. We have had concussions, broken bones, ruptured spleens, you know, usual football injuries. Yet those boys still want to get back out there and go again. Football is a tough game.

And every once in a while (once last year, once so far this year) they actually win a game.

We are not going to win any state titles anytime soon, but those boys are learning valuable lessons about life itself and I believe will be better men because of it.

As a former member of a losing football team that used that experience to win it all the following year...calling of the decision is the worst decision they could have ever made.
