    That depends...

If it is a state sponsored militia I would be willing to join. That type of militia would have been a great help in New Orleans recently. Though little used these days the militia is provided for in both the U.S. Constitution and some (maybe most) of the state constitutions.

If it is an independent militia group - no. I don't think so.

We do actually have them in this part of the world, a militia is called a schutterij overhere.
Those have been continually in existance in one form or another since the early middle ages. The local one is (ofcourse) Roman Catholic.

If I were into performing archery with a crossbow, I would have joined.

Yes, it is a pretty interesting link. More informative than the army national guard site. That was useless bandwidth.

Yes I would join a state sponsored militia. Some of your private ones are run a little on the fringe. Sometimes we need militia in emergencies or to fight and protect citizens. I served in the National Guard for 6 years and helped our community many times.

We need state sponsored militias that are under the power of the state and not the federal government.

I believe all able bodied citizens should be required to join for a certian period of time (like say 6 months to 1 year), and then after that- remain on-call in case needed. When they are called, they fight (or provide their service in an emergency), and then once the engagement (or emergency) is over, they return to their lives as citizens.

As Soulman said, the private ones are a little "on the fringe". Unfortunately, the "Organized Militia" is under the control of the US federal government. But our constitution says "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.".

Well regulated Militias, made up of armed able bodied citizens, which are NOT under the control of the federal government, protect the people from tyranny. "Being necessary to the security of a FREE state". At least thats how I view it. That's why I believe the right to bear arms is right next to the militia in that amendment.

So... No, I will not be part of a private militia, because they are not well regulated and organized. But I would gladly participate in a Michigan Militia that is organized by the state of Michigan. I would much rather serve my state than my federal government.

Absoloutly. The National Guard are the minute men of our society. They are the ones called to arms for a local crises. They are by definition a state militia. They can however be activated to the federal level.

With all due respect buckster...that wasn't the question. If we are christians we should all do what we can to love our neighbors.
