This poll is intended to give us an accurate view of how each of us feel about the King James Version based on our studies, experiences, and evaluations.

If you were the attendant at a Christian bookstore, and an individual asked for your help in choosing a Bible...

I happen to like my King James version, which I have had since 1945. I am used to it and all its flaws.

For others, and assuming we are talking about John Q. Christian, I would say whatever version fits your needs. The thing is to read it and understand what you are reading.

The average person is unaware of the technical qualities of a translation and really don't care. They just want to know what God is saying, and what He intends for them.

I say, whatever leads them into a greater spiritual life in Christ is good for all of us.

Theological debate is best behind closed doors. We will always have our differences and there are arguments that leads us in different directions on both sides of the equation.

Frankly, the dispute over translations, I think, does a disservice to the Kingdom of Christ.

    Cheers,

    Jim

If the above statement is true then the fault lies with the pastors and teachers who have not preached the whole counsel of God (which includes exposing error).

And leave the common people completely in the dark so they will be more willing to believe the lies that a false preacher or false teacher brings along their paths.

It is the multiplicity of modern versions that has done a disservice to the Kingdom of Christ. The true word of God gets tossed aside as more people are carried about by every wind of doctrinal change.

No problem Neal, that's what I am here for. It has become a full-time job.

NOTE: In my haste to complete this poll this morning, I inadvertently left out a "non-applicable" option for questions 4 & 5. I apologize. Just do the best you can.

I was wondering about that. That's okay, though. It is still manageable. [IMG]

We are talking about reading a particular version, and not what we preach and teach from the pulpit.

Let's get the people reading some version of God's word. That is the thing. How many do you know that hang up their bible, Monday to Saturday and show it on Sunday, sometimes.

No one keeps the people in the dark on theological matters, but I guess reading comprehension is a problem. Again it has to do with the copies of the bible and not doctrines of grace and truth.

The average pew-sitter does not understand Greek or Hebrew and couldn't care less about that. Let the theologians concern themselves with the original languages and errors. It has always been that pastors lead the way, and the people rely on pastors to preach truth. Unless every congregant goes to seminary, it will always be.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I would never recommend the KJV. I rank version in the following:

    NASB/ESV
    NKJV
    MKJV
    LITV
    KJV

Also, I never take it upon to try and talk people out of the KJV (I know many who use it). I will argue against KJVO though as the lie it is. No preacher with integrity and truth as a concern teaches KJVO.

Why?? </font>[/QUOTE]Since Bob put this in the opening post, I will try to answer the question with Bob's statement in mind. I trust it won't be deleted.

    4. The fact that cults prefer people to use the KJV.
    5. The association with KJVO (even if it is unwarranted).
    6. The additions the KJV translator put into the text (apocrapha and a topless picture of Eve specifically).
    7. The many corrections/revisions of the KJV.

Those are just several. There are others but it would be better to have a new thread about them.

Jim, I think that is the key to the extreme popularity of the KJV. It has been used by so many for so long and has been studied and examined and disected to pieces and we don't see any evil intent behind those flaws. It is like the wrinkles I am beginning to show, they just add character.

I believe that this poll may not give us as accurate of a picture as we would want - for the simple reason that if and when a person is going into a Christian Bookstore, he or she already has an idea what to purchase. So the deciding factor would not be the choice of a specific translation but rather the size, color, material texture, print size, red-letter edition of the Bible, etc., etc.

We need to consider also the following facts: A new convert is usually given a Bible by the person who led him/her to the Lord (that is the right way to do it), therefore he/she would not go to a Christian Bookstore to buy a Bible. On the other hand, a mature Christian has already developed certain taste for a specific translation, and would not buy for example an NIV if he/she was nurtured on the KJV.... ;) [IMG]

I think there's a lot of merit to this. We pastors need to teach our people to think critically and Scripturally about textual criticism and the version issue. We don't need to cover every jot and tittle necessarily, but we do need to give them enough to make them wise for souls in this matter.

Then again, does this old adage apply?
