I think I've made my stance pretty clear on this issue. I think a lot of ignorant statements have come from the KJVO crowd, that have actually hurt the folks who read it only because they prefer it, not because they have an agenda against other bibles. I don't buy the Ruckmanite hype, I just prefer the KJV.

That being said, I have observed the following...

Most of the folks here who question the virgin birth use another version.

Most of the folks here who deny the worldwide flood use another version.

Most of the folks here who support women pastors use another version.

Most of the folks here who say homosexuality isn't a sin use another version.

Can anybody tell me why these things are so ?

Before you answer, I know there are non-KJVers who are very solid on doctrine, and who hold innerrancy very dear to their hearts. This thread isn't an attack, but an observation.

So I am interested in people's thoughts.

As you admit that there are non-KJVO's that hold right doctrine, you show that while these things may be true, correlation does not imply causality. Typically, the position's you hold are not promoted by people who use the NIV or the NASB. The RSV and NRSV are the translation of choice for them ... just ask them.

Pastor Larry is right; coincidence or correlation does not equal causation. And that works both ways. There are KJVOs that step out of bounds on critical doctrines as well, not the least of which being the doctrine of revelation. Is the KJV bad because some cults use it? Of course not. Is the KJV bad because some of its major proponents are not conservative or orthodox? Of course not. Now if all the KJVers were liberal or all the NIVers or all the NASBers were not orthodox, you might have a point. But you can't paint with a broad brush there.

And even here, this is a circumstance where their theology produced these translations, not the translation producing their theology. Think about it.

Because that's how some people choose to interpret. It has nothing to do with which version. Please understand the difference between translation and interpretation. Other versions say the same thing as the KJV on all those issues you listed, so maybe it's not the version they read, but the type of car they drive. You should look into this. ;)

What has been said so far is correct. Correlation does not necessarily mean causation.

Let's consider the flip side of this. How many cults use the KJV? The Mormons certainly promote that translation in their TV ads. Since a cult promotes the KJV, doesn't that make the KJV suspect in the eyes of individual who started this thread.

Gee shucks, I have to agree with Larry, Tom, et al. Correlation does not imply causality.

I was no less a liberal when I was in basic training and was only allowed a little pocket KJV NT and read it through.

When working from a translation I generally prefer the NRSV or the REB (and sometimes the RSV). I use the NASB when I'm doing translation work because it's such a literal, wooden translation.

i forget where i read that a survey of American pastors revealed that Charismatic pastors most use the KJB while Evangelical ones use the NIV.

i wonder if KJBOs' good tree analogy wld hold true for this.

Perhaps I haven't paid close enough attention, but it doesn't seem like their on many on this board who believe the things you have laid down. I know of about two, and one of them has already posted on this thread.

That said, he is a list of whole "denominations" who still use the KJV.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
    Church of Christ
    Seventh Day Adventist Church
Peter "Faith + works before and after the church age" Ruckmann
Assemblies of God (at least those that I have visisted).

I'm sure you can find countless churches who use Modern Versions who are heretics or cults, just like the above mentioned. It doesn't mean the KJV or the ESV teaches heresy, just that there always have been heretics and always will be. Peter mentioned them distorting Paul's writings, and friends, THAT WAS THE ORIGINAL TEXT!

Disclaimer, I am not doubting the salvation of the Ruckmann crown, or Assemblies of God members (of whom I have a few close friends) or any body for that matter. I am just pointing out that they all have teachings we disagree with, some to a great extent, and they are all KJV users.

I was raised in a home where anyone with any belief in anything higher than man was considered "weak minded". After hearing the gospel and getting saved I started searching for truth. After 10 years, I wore out a Good News for Modern Man and numerous other versions but after I found the KJV and haven't put it down. God has spoken to me through the other versions but not as much or with the intensity of the KJV. It's spirit speaks to mine.

"Pastors of Pentecostal and charismatic churches tend to rely heavily on the King James (45%), while significant proportions favor the NIV (21%) or the New King James Version (19%)."

Well, Brother, I know many people who use MV and don't hold to what you've just described. I am one of them that doesn't. I don't believe you are trying to stir up trouble. I believe it's a fair and honest question. Sorry I can't speak for those who do hold to those things you mentioned.

If using another version other than the KJV makes one a liberal, count me in, PROUDLY!

The KJV has no "spirit." There is only one Spirit who leads, teaches, and convicts and knows all languages of all locations of all times. Therefore any translation can be used, but none is actually necessary.
