I have also heard that it derived from nasally linguistic skills.

I certainly did not know it was intended only for
    men either.

    1. US and Canadian slang.

Wow! I didn't know it was Canadian slang!

wonder if that is the same as bloke in England? Naw, one can be a good bloke and I gather that is a derogatory term.

Abiyah, this is educating for us across the atlantic, but is there a reason for the question? Have you been troubled somewhere by the use of this word?

    yours, Jon.

It's not used only for the guys. When I had a surgery in Oakland in 1974, I received abyssmal care on the floor where I was. Why? I was the only white on that floor at the time, including the nursing staff during one of the shifts, and I was referred to as the honky.

And yes, it is totally and definitely derogatory!

Oh, no! I have used it before, in jest, though. I
have called my son a honky, because he is
whiter-looking than I. He just called and asked
me if my very small and very limited etymology
books had its origin in them, and they did not.

Another word, used derrogatorily, for any white
person is cracker. Probably the most derrogatory
term is white trash. Initially, trailor trash intended
white persons, but I think it is all-inclusive now as
a derrogatory term. White boy is another for adult
white males. Some other terms I would not even
    write. 8o)

To be crackers in England is to be a basket-case, or crazy..In East London we just said the bloke or cow was in Her Majesties pleasure.

Jon, we can develop a whole new vocabulary with the things we are learning.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I usually don't use Honky or Trailer Park Trash.

    Just "white boy." :D

8oD I have heard the word kwackers used for
your crackers! Same thing: basket case, nuts,
    nuttier than a fruit cake.

    Voracious reader: book worm.
    Fast driver: lead-foot.
    Overweight: vertically challenged

Actually, none of the above! Sorry to disappoint you folks. But when I was serving in the US Armed Forces (back from 1963 to 1966), my friends called me "Hunky." Naturally I did not know what it meant at the time, but later when I checked it in my Random House Dictionary of the English Language, I read the following:

Since I was a foreigner, and a Hungarian by birth, the fellows applied this endearing term to me ;) until I learned the language, and then I gave them a sermon :D so that they never mentioned it again! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Wow! I always thought that a hunky was a good-
looking, muscular man! I call my husband "hunky"!

Sorry, Barnabas!! You are really a good-looking,
muscular man. That is what they meant. That's it.
    Sure of it.

And you Americans think you stand a hope of understanding the King James ENGLISH Bible [IMG] [IMG]

By the way, a headmaster in a school in East London decided to re-write portions of the Bible into Cockney English to make it more attractive to young people.....one ends up with:

"And the Lord took five loaves of Uncle Fred and two Lillian Gish to feed the 5000 geezers their tommy tucker."...Now, that is English

    Cheers,

    Jim

Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?
Norwegians learn Norwegian, the Greeks are taught their Greek
In France every Frenchman knows his language from 'A' to 'Zed' -
The French don't care what they do, actually, as long as they pronounce it properly.
Arabians learn Arabian with the speed of summer lightning.
The Hebrews learn it backwards which is absolutely frightening.
Use proper English, you're regarded as a freak.
Oh, why can't the English -
Why can't the English learn to

Set a good example for people whose English is painful to your ears?
The Scots and the Irish leave you close to tears!
There even are places where English completely disappears --

In America they haven't used it for years!
