Concerning 1 Timothy 5: 17-15
The phrase, “No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments” is nestled amidst verses 22 and 24, where Timothy is given the admonition to carefully select his elders.
Plenty has been written about the meaning of this single verse.
What I'd like is a discussion of its implications within the context of the passage.
1 Timothy 5:17-25 concerns elders.
Is Paul's advise in 5:23 simply a stray comment that popped into his head while he was writing about elders and leadership?
Or does the verse have a deeper meaning? ...like a wise saying that reinforces his advise about elders.

- Elders are to be properly honored and paid their worth (1 Tim 5:17-18).
- Elders are not to be encumbered by false charges (1 Tim 5:19).
- Elders who persistently sin should be publicly rebuked (1 Tim 5:20-21).
- Timothy should select elders with care so as not to allow sin to contaminate their witness (1 Timothy 5:22, 24).
