I would hope that we all agree this is, indeed, a 'hymn,' even though it isn't traditional.

 

Not being a theohlowjun, I can't say if this is a true hymn or not, but it is my favorite.

It's one of my favorites and one of the very few classic hymns that is actually addressed to Jesus.

I'd have to go with "How Firm a Foundation", as my all time favorite Hymn...

The reason it blesses me so much is that, 1st of all, I just love the melody, and 2nd, after the 1st verse, verses 2, 3, and 4 are all from Gods perspective, as if He is singing to us, the truth found there!

I had never noticed that before until one day I had my guitar out and was playing and singing this Hymn, all by myself at home. By the time I got to the end tears were streaming down my face! It was such a blessing!

Go back and sing it, if you know the melody, and see if God doesnt bless you during the last 3 verses!

{By the way, from what I understand there are two different melodies that are set to these words. I dont know why, but someone told me that. I am referring to the one that J. Vernon McGee uses as his theme song for his radio broadcast)

 

Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound!

 

many hymnals have their songs categorized. as an example categorization: Worship, Testimony, Christmas...

Focus on God? hmmm, i've heard much of that kind from the Pentecostals, singing the thoughts "I love you God", "You are worthy God", "You are beautiful"...

God regards His Words with utmost importance (i may get out of the line here). hymns, therefore, which show realization of God's word and working in the lives of those who sing them delights God. many songs incorporate doctrines and the effects of those learned doctrines in their lives. consider:

1. Wonderful grace of Jesus, greater than all my sins...

2. Because He lives, I can face tomorrow (my favorite)

A hymn should not recount the experience of a man falling in love with God but, rather, God's love for fallen man.

The words to this hymn was written after two major traumas in Spafford's life. The first was the Great Chicago Fire of October 1871, which ruined him financially. Shortly after, while crossing the Atlantic, all four of Spafford's daughters died in a collision with another ship. Spafford's wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram: "SAVED ALONE."

Several weeks later, as Spafford's own ship passed near the spot where his daughters died, he was inspired to write these words.

Bliss originally named the tune "Ville de Havre" after the ship on which Spafford's four girls perished, the SS Ville de Havre. Ironically, Bliss himself died in a tragic train wreck shortly after writing this music.

"Tis so sweet"

 

Great choices, though perhaps not "true hymns". (BTW while I find it interesting to read and attempt to apply definitions of "hymn" as opposed to "psalm" as opposed to "spiritual song", and to correlate them with sections of the hymnal, I think too much can easily be made of such distinctions, while I am not convinced that much damage is ever done by making too little of them.)

It is well is a great song but I guess my favorites are The dearest Friend and I never shall forget the day. I also love How great thou art.

Yes, but is Blessed Assurance a true HYMN or Fanny Crosby's personal testimony of blessed assurance through direct angelic communication?

 

Angelic? With the very Spirit of God dwelling in one's heart, what need has one of angelic communication?
