    What's your first childhood memory?

My first one is of a playpen. I was in a playpen with yellow flowered padding and nobody was there. I saw something shiny and climbed out of the playpen.
Whatever the shiny thing was, I grabbed it and played with it, then crawled over and stuck it in an electrical socket. That's all I remember.

And now you know why I'm so messed up.

Wow, Gina! That was a close call!

    This should be fun. :)

My first memory is of me dropping a glass jug of milk when I was about 2 years old. I picked it up and it slid out of my hands and landed on my foot. The glass broke, cut my toe, and the white milk splashed all over the black tile floor. Huge mess!! I remember the contrast of the white milk against the black floor. And yes, I still have the scar 50 years later.

I think my earliest memory was at 14 months of age, the night my twin brothers were born. I remember a lady telling me my mommy had to go to the hospital and I was going to spend the night with her. She was making a bed for me on the floor with the couch cushions, and I remember they were of brown tweed.

I verified this memory with my mother years later and she told me that yes, her best friend had kept me that night and I had slept on the brown tweed couch cushions.

I also remember being about 2 and playing in the church nursery and wanting a certain toy, but another kid got the toy and I cried, but wasn't able to tell the nursery workers what was wrong because I didn't know the words. My brain knew what happened and I was upset, but my language skills were not developed enough to communicate. I remember being very frustrated that I couldn't communicate my thoughts then. Maybe that's why I talk so much now. LOL!

I have several early memories, but which is the first I don't know.

The one I think is the earliest is of Sunday School or rather Children's church of some sort. It was held behind a curtain to seperate us from "big" church and me being me I wanted to know why, but couldn't articulate it. They finally called my parents back thinking I wanted them and then I was REALLY confused. First they wanted me behind the curtain and then they didn't. What's up with that? And I didn't want them anyhow, I just wanted the curtain open so I could see. (yep, I was nosy)

Another is laying on my little bed watching my mother paint my bedroom this really awful shade of pepto bismol pink and wondering why she would DO that! (still don't know lol) And then I wondered what the paint thinner tasted like. (pst, it doesn't taste good!)

And the refridgerator. I wasn't allowed to open the fridge. It looked like this:

I wanted to know why it had wings. Refridgerators don't fly no matter what my brother tried to tell me! Oh and fridge sat in the dining room. Don't know why, but that's where it was and *I* wasn't allowed to open it! Did I tell you that??

I was somewhat older when I stuck a hairpin in the light socket just to see what would happen! :D I got a black thumbnail from that!

I have two sisters who are 10 and 7 years older than me. They had to mind me outdoors. They, however, spilled cold water down my neck to make me cry. Mum would then bring "the poor little bugger indoors", and sisters would run off laughing.
I did get even later! Tried to get one sister enrolled in a convent.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I only know the date of my first memory because I saw it in my baby book. I remembered being in a place where there were a lot of missiles. The seemed huge and felt like we were underground.

I found out a few years ago that my dad took to me work on my first birthday (5 July, 1956). During the day he had to take some papers to an underground missile complex.

I also remember going to a carnival when I must have been around 2-3.

I contend that I have a pre-birth memory, but don't know how that is possible :)

My earliest memory is at the age of 3 years. I was in the front yard playing with our dog. I remember the dog running away at that time and never returning.

MK, why, oh why do I get the distinct impression that your parents were very very busy when you were a little one?

BTW I remember that fridge! LOL Except it was whitish. They tip WAY too easy when you're little and tugging away at that handle. Or maybe it was trying to fly. hehe

I remember being in an overnight bag.....it was brown and on the floor of the aeroplane that mum and dad and my brother and me flew in from Kuala Lumpur to Adelaide in 1961. I think I was about 2. Mum was probably nursing my brother. It was warm and cosy and vibrated (the plane that is).....I have always been a person who falls asleep when in motion.

Yeah, they were busy! They were remodeling the house they bought either just before or just after I was born. Which is probably why the fridge was in the diningroom!

And ours was white/creamy too, but I couldn't find an image of a white one so I made do!
