1. What are your ten favorite hymns?
2. Which do you think is the most underappreciated?
3. Describe why your favorite one touches you so much.
BTW, this isn't for CCM favorites. Only for hymns, unless you particularly like the hymn as sung by a CCM artist.
I'll start off with my answers in a minute.

2. Which do you think is the most underappreciated?
Just a closer walk with thee. It's a beautiful song, both the lyrics and the melody, but I rarely hear it sung in church.

3. Describe why your favorite one touches you so much.
"Come Thou Fount" is a close runner up, but "Be Thou My Vision" is my favorite, and I especially enjoy hearing Fernando Ortega sing it. It gives praise to God while at the same time perfectly describing what God should mean to each of us. We're blind, in the dark, and the only way to walk straight without falling on our faces is to let him be our vision for us. Then, as if that isn't enough, the song continues! If you've never heard it, I suggest you listen to it and really hear the lyrics.

2. Which do you think is the most underappreciated?

I would have to say that I think "Wonderful Grace of Jesus" is not used as much as it should be. It is a beautiful hymn that pays homage to our God's marvelous grace.

3. Describe why your favorite one touches you so much.

It is probably evident from my list of favorites that I love the hymns that reassure us of God's love. When I sing the song "He Hideth My Soul," and think of how God has His hand on our lives, it lifts me up like nothing else can.

I do not think any of them are underappreciated.

3. Describe why your favorite one touches you so much.

I do not think it is that they touch me so much, as you just enjoy singing some songs more than others. Probably the top ten are because my late-husband played from that hymnal on his quitar for us to sing together, at church and at home.

I see those two hymnals as different as night and day. I tend to enjoy singing the Heavenly Highway Hymnal much more than the regular Baptist Hymnal.

My favorites are similar to Kiffin's:

I have many other favorites,but these come to mind. I like And,can it be so much because it is one hymn that truly espresses our unworthiness and God's greatness. It also expresses the gospel very clearly.

2. Which do you think is the most underappreciated?

On Reformation Day, we sing a series of hymns written by Martin Luther. However, the greatest hymn of the Reformation is not sung at all. Salvation Unto Us is Come is the confessional hymn of the Reformation, not A Mighty Fortress. Many people heard the gospel for the first time proclaimed through the singing of Salvation Unto Us is Come. Luther shed tears of joy when he heard it, “By means of this hymn the precious truth concerning righteousness by faith through the grace of God was sung into the congregations.”

3. Describe why your favorite one touches you so much.

My only comfort is through the precious doctrine of justification through faith in Christ alone. By Grace I’m Saved teaches me to trust in Christ completely.

Other Favorite Hymns (newer than our Hymnal)

How Deep the Father's Love for Us
Wonderful, Merciful Savior

I don't know any that are underappreciated.

I love when God's people join in worship. There's something about the sound of a congregation lifting their voices in praise that is a stirring sound-picture. Even before I was a believer, I remember being amazed at how the congregation sounded when they all joined as one to sing of God's love, or Jesus' sacrifice. That's why I love them so much I guess.

3: The writers had a great gift from God to express His Truth loud and clear. No "What's all that about?" in their songs.

Very difficult to select just ten favourites and my opinion tends to change from time to time, but here are my current favourites in no particular order.

1. ABIDE WITH ME.
2. WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS.
3. CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY. HALLELUHAH
4. WHEN PEACE LIKE A RIVER (IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL)
5. O CHRIST WHAT BURDENS BOWED THY HEAD.
6. LOW IN THE GRAVE HE LAY.
7. ALL HAIL THE POWER OF JESUS' NAME.
8. I CANNOT TELL.
9. NEARER MY GOD TO THEE.
10.HOW DEEP THE FATHERS LOVE.

And thats not to mention How Great Thou Art; I Lift My Eyes To the Quiet Hills; Amazing Grace; Holy, Holy, Holy; Be Still, My Soul; I will Praise Him; His Name, His Name Shall be Called Wonderful etc. etc.

I couldn't pick one favourite from these, I love them all. Not sure either that any are under-rated but I don't hear 'Nearer My God To Thee' as much as I'd like to.

Most underappreciated: Agree with Dr. Bob on this one, it's the early American ones. The one I think is most underappreciated is Sands of Time. What a beautiful song.

Here's a verse:

Gives me chills just singing it with my wife right now.

3. The Sands of Time is my favorite because it does touch me so. The verse above implies a strong relationship, a marriage to Jesus Christ and teaches so much pure doctrine.

Underappreciated--I'm not sure. I think the amazing poetry in some of them (like When I Survery the Wondrous Cross) is underappreciated.

A lot of my favorites have always been "cross" hymns, even when I was a child. ("And Can It Be" was my favorite from the time I was very young.) I can't explain exactly why they touch me so much, but they do.....

Lately, however, I've begun to appreciate some of the more "experiential" ones--like "Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus".
