You're Review of David Platt's book?

Havent read it...sorry. Would you recommend it?

 

I just finished viewing the Web Based advertisements & the interviews with
Platt....interesting but it could be a scam too. Im a skeptic by nature....so I mean is this another one of these wako Saddle Back book/programs? I could go on Facebook----NOT ! And check it out....but I hate that cult followings. Let me know what you find out!

I read it. A lot of preaching to the choir IMO. Platt comes down strong for a simple Christianity, devoid of excess spending and comfort, in order to funnel resources, both personnel and financial, into the mission field.

The book was a good opportunity to check the condition of one's state of mind concerning the Great Commission, and Platt wrote something to offend just about everyone within the scope of what we collectively call "church."

I found it best in small daily doses, as a lengthy read would soon weigh me down in a way that I found counter-productive.

As regards the use for a study group, it will be along the lines of Blackaby's "Experiencing God." It will cause a person or group to consider what they are or are not doing for the sake of Christ and the kingdom.

Overall, it is on the plus side, save that no one, even Platt, can live up to the rhetoric of his own preaching.

 

Thanks. I'm starting it now. What I've read so far has challenged me to think again about a number of things.

I absolutely HATE to read. I can read, but I don't enjoy it. I don't want to waste my time on useless reading. I've started many books, but...

Also, I'm considering the audio book so that I can read along with the author.

 

The book has all the hallmarks of a work that will enter our vocabulary and stay with us for the next decade until the next similar work comes along.

Don't let my slightly "meh" tone discourage folks from reading the book. It is actually quite thought provoking -- enough so that it gets a bit tedious by the end of the book -- I've just seen a few like this come around over the years. They make a bang, everyone studies and cites the work, and in large part, the work displaces the Word for a bit.
