Youth Camps?

Our kids have gone to three camps --

Teen Valley Ranch in North Carolina - www.tvr.org - located in western NC
Life for Youth Camp - www.lifeforyouthcamp.com - located in Vero Beach, FL
Sharp Top Cove -http://sites.younglife.org/camps/SharpTopCove/default.aspx - located in north GA

Our kids visited the first two with our church. They went to Sharp Top Cove with their school (Warrior Week - the 1st week of school), where all 400 high school students spend their first week at a Christian camp together.

 

Our association does our own youth camp..

My oldest son went there for a bit.

 

We do three camps each summer.

Our kids and youngest middle-schoolers have done centri-kid; our junior high does centrifuge; our senior high does M-fuge. For the SH, that is a camp/mission trip combination. Good times.

 

Camp Copass in Denton, Texas. It is a beautiful camp with great facilities, and they are on a peninsula that juts into a large lake.

 

We don't do a "camp," but we do take them to a Summer Student Conference called Seesalt. It's held on the campus of Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC. Info about it is at www.concoxions.com.

 

Over the years, this is it:

1. Falls Creek Baptist Assembly, Davis, Oklahoma

2. South Mountain Baptist Camp, Connelly Springs, NC (privately done as well as provided by SMBC)

3. Lots of others privately done, but I can't remember where we went.

 

What?? No one going to The Wilds?? We went there as kids -- enjoyable & beautiful place. Very strict if I remember correctly (though I think it tends to be fundamentalist). In fact, I don't think "mixed bathing" was allowed.

 

*chuckle* years ago, one of my church folk told me about the Wilds, and he had a connection...so he told them about us.

I promised him I'd look into it.

Funny thing...I got a call from someone associated with the Wilds...and the basic gist of the conversation was, "I don't think you need to come here."

They must have heard what a reprobate I was, and what a bunch of heathern I carried around.

That's been years and years back...I wish I knew what "tipped them off" about us. Might make for a good laugh. Or not. :tongue3: :saint:

 

I guess you SBC liberal types aren't all that welcome. I checked the staff pages and they look very BJ oriented. Good thing I was an indy/fundy as a kid or I wouldn't have gone.

 

The youth camp that many of our youth attend is one that my church help found back in 1982 -- Lighthouse Christian Camp in Smithville, TN www.lighthousechristiancamp.com

This camp is not your typical church youth camp in that its primary purpose is not to cater to "church youth." Instead, as its mission statement reads:

Lighthouse Christian Camp is dedicated to helping needy, disadvantaged children suffering from s*xu@l, physical, mental, emotional abuse and neglect. The purpose of the camp is to provide an enjoyable, exciting, enriching, quality outdoor experience, where they learn of God the Creator and are afforded an opportunity to come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The staff and volunteer counselors purpose to provide love, encouragement and counsel to needy children suffering from learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral problems, and low self-esteem and self-images, resulting from abuse, neglect and rejection.

Hundred of needy children are given the opportunity to attend camp, absolutely free of charge, through summer camp programs, fall, winter and spring retreats.

An ongoing follow-up program is administered where love, ecouragement, counsel and help is given on a continued basis to needy children. Follow-up programs are continued to adulthood to assist young people in maturing to a rewarding and productive place in society.

In addition to their focus as a camp for disadvantaged youth, LCC does set aside some summer weeks for "church youth" to attend this camp located along the shores of Center Hill Lake in middle Tennessee.

Recently LCC has branched out to provide housing for widows and orphaned boys and girls.

One of the highlights for me is their annual Christmas parties (one for the"mission boys" and another for the "mission girls"). It's at these parties that they cash in their points (for good behavior & other positive things) that they earned during the summer for monopoly money which, in turn, is used to purchase gifts for their families and to write letters of thanks to their sponsors who paid for their way to summer camp.

What a thrill it's been for me to read these letters! Often they'll write about how they came to know Jesus as their Savior because someone sponsored them to come to Lighthouse Christian Camp.

To me, Lighthouse Christian Camp is one of the better ways to evangelize the "forgotten children." No telling how many children from the projects have come to know Christ through LCC.

Then too, when they go back to their family and friends, many of these children become "evangelists" in areas where few of us would dare venture.

 

Amazing ministry there.

Our son (with his school) is going to Sharptop Cove in a few weeks. It is a young life camp located in north Georgia. Is anyone familiar with it??
