I joined the navy in 1983, Went to boot camps at Great mistakes, Spent 4 years as a hospital corpsman. The congress turned Reagan’s request for 600 ships down. So they cut off most reenlistments. So I ended up getting out. But could not find a job, So I re-entered in the United Stated Coast Guard. Where I spent 11 years before I was medically retired for an injured back. Retired in 1996 after 16 years.

I'm retired Army (91F/68W, 12B, and 79R) and AGR in the TNARNG (79T). You know, it just hit me that while I enjoy talking about the military and being around military people, I don't miss it. This amazes me (I loved the service, and after 23 years I really thought it would be a difficult transition to civilian life, but it wasn't). I do, of course, think about my military service every time I climb a latter or have to ask people to repeat what they just said. :)

Huh? Almost everyday the wife of 46years tells me I need hearing aids. I tried em once and hated them! Uncle Sam's Misguided Children, 0311. Rifleman.

Yep I need them. Lost a lot of my hearing hanging around too many Jets on MCAS Eltoro. The very reason I am now on disability with the VA. I was 5811 Station MP's.

US Navy 1986 to 1996. Avionics Technician on the A-6 Intruder. Discharged to illness from the dry cleaning solvent used to clean aircraft. Now 50 percent disabled from it. My husband is also a Navy vet. We met at Church.

My Desert Storm Ring. The Ring maker didn't make my design small.

In 1967 I was drafted but in college/seminary, so the President of the school appealed to allow me to finish and be ordained first. In 1972 I was endorsed by the Associated Gospel Churches as a Chaplain in the US Navy. In Detroit Naval Yard I stood with other "officers" (medical, lawyers, etc) awaiting to be sworn in when the commanding officer stopped the ceremony. President Nixon made a proclamation that he was "phasing down" Vietnam and that as of noon that day, no more officer commissions could be made.

We were given a small stipend and a thank-you letter and told "don't call us, we'll call you if ever needed". Many of us had wives/families present and to say it was a shock is understatement. Teresa found out the next day that she was pregnant with our first child and God opened up a church for me to pastor.

I was called up one month before my 35th birthday (when I would age-out for induction) as escalations in Lebanon called for build-up of troops. I failed the physical exam, so my endorsement was forfeited to a younger preacher. Not God's will for my life and ministry, but a salute to all of my BB friends who did serve when called.

Well, Dr Bob - in Apr of 1971 - I had arrived at Oakland Army Base for shipment to Viet-nam.
About 36 hours later in formation we were informed that we were being sent to Germany!
Being I Private - I just did what I was told!
Arrived in Germany -
Went to Chapel service (I wont mention the Chaplain was Lutheran) He asked me how I enjoyed the
Service. I told him I was a Baptist and I was used to good preaching! (that was when I was young, dumb & stupid!)
He told me the fella standing next to the pulpit, went to a Baptist church downtown Sun pm's. So I went with him. It was a landmark Baptist. Later, I went to the other Baptist church in town. That is the one I joined and that is when i became a Southern Baptist !
