If anybody here remembers that film made about Mohammed, that was many years ago, where one of the actors was Anthony Quinn who played the role of Mohammed's uncle Ali, there was no actor who played Mohammed.

We only had a voice.

That is because Muslims strictly prohibit the painting or imaging of any likeness of Mohammed. That is how much they revere that false prophet whose bones now lie somewhere, unlike Jesus whom we call Lord, and then portray with actors like James Caviezel who will, after this film, probably play a murderer or a rouge cop or whatever.

I recommend that you take a look at this antithesis to all that has been written as to why Christians ought to see the Passion.

Then we should never attend a Passion play at any Southern Baptist church (or any church for that matter - after all, we aren't sure if the person "playing" Jesus Christ lives a sinless life). We should never have any pictures of Christ in our homes. Burn the flannelgraph of Jesus depicted in a white robe with that blue sash thingy. Toss out any Children's Bibles that have pictures of Christ. No movies regarding Jesus should ever be made by anyone (including Christians)....well, I hope someone can see my point.

Brother, it's a sad day when Baptists resort to extolling the virtues of Islam as compared to Christianity, IMO.

Jesus used Saul/Paul, Peter, Niccodemus, Zacchaeus, Mary Magdelene, Matthew and even me! God used a small tree, a big fish and a talking ass. Why is HE so powerless now that HE cannot use a mere movie?

Say what you all will, our Bible, no matter what version, did not see fit to describe the Lord's hair (long, or short ?), facial hair (full, partial ?), skin (white ? olive ? black ?), height (short, tall), build (muscular, skinny), eyes (blue ? black ?), or nose (high bridge ? aquiline ? flat ?), therefore, any representation of him, on towels, scarves, stained glass, paper, magazine, quilt, or whatever is a direct violation of His commandment which still stands. Grace does not mean exemption from obeying the law, only exemption from its penalties.

And if it appears to some here that I am extolling the virtues of Islam, so be it. The truth is, many (not all, but many0 Baptists and "born-again" Christians who smirk at others for not subscribing to the idea of "soul winning" do not even come close to the zeal of Mormons and JW's who start knocking on doors early in the morning and retire late at night.

And Diane, with all due respects to you and Lady Eagle, he will not use a mere movie, because he did not give the order to go and preach to Hollywood. He gave it to the ministry. Mel Gibson and James Caviezel are not of the ministry. Hollywood is not of the kingdom, either.

I do not agree with the following interpretation, but I will mention it. Many conservative and/or fundamentalist Presbyterian or Reformed groups DO believe all of the above. For example, there are Reformed websites and message boards. Many of those members have no intention of seeing "The Passion", strictly on the view that any images, in any manner, of Christ on earth violate both the Second Commandment and the Reformed Regulative Principle.
Unlike many earlier Reformed thinkers, they are not against ALL images. Therefore not against all movies. Many of these people dearly love The Lord of The Rings and Braveheart, for eg.

SOME of them MIGHT be okay with a movie that had the Lord portrayed in it, if there was only a silhouette about which nothing could be discerned, and if it was only for "entertainment", and would only be viewed by individual families at home, never in the context of any kind of church meeting, including fellowship (non-preaching) services.

Wouldn't be the first time. In England, lots of stained glass was destroyed by Henry VIII in the 1500's, and then Oliver Cromwell really got going in the 1600's. The Puritans at the time in England thought the destruction was a good thing.
In my town, IF a Baptist church has stained glass, the windows merely have some panes of different colors of glass. If you want to see beautiful stained glass windows here, you have to take a tour of the Episcopal church.

In our urge to emphasize the centrality of preaching, we as Baptists (some fundamentalist Presbyterians too) often do manage to deemphasize anything artistic or beautiful and just meet together in our very plain metal buildings. I used to assume it was a lack of money. It isn't quite often, but it expresses a real theological belief.

This is one reason why God is allowing the Islamic terrorists to wake us up out of our super-capitalistic hypocritical Churchianity.

Like in the OT, fierce tribes attacked decadent Israel, and Jeremiah. Isaiah, etc. sounded a warning.

Many traditional "Christian" things are non- or even anti-Biblical, but the pew potatoes are sleeping right through them.

They hate it when you disturb their ecstasy and comfort zones by rebuking the pagan, mystical, occult, masochistic, political, anti-intellectual elements creeeping into the churches. How many "Christian" seminars and video presentations utilize blatant hypnotic and suggestology techniques? Lots.

How many churchgoers can tell you 15 characteristics of a dictatorial cult leader or cult organization? Very few.

How many churchgoers know that it has been proven clinically that ranting and raving against one or two sins only (say, abortion and gay marriage) is a strong indication the pastor is into something related to those subjects, possibly internet porn? Statistics show that something like 75% or more of pastors really enjoy porn web sites. They "struggle with it."

That fanatical, hysterical, obsessive hostility toward something indicates a secret, but demonstrable, unhealthy interest in, or fondness for, that object of supposed hostility?

Amen to the preached word pinyobaptist. Find where the commission is and you find where Jesus gave HIS authority.

It is that authority the RC have always stood against and still do and it is that representation of that authority this movie is standing against.

But this is not the only confusion concerning the authority of the commission. We see it resulting in divisions every day which result in churches that spring up because of emotionalism. But when only the fat of that offering is burnt up (and fat burns quickly) there is no meat left and no desire to eat if there were.

We have had the Sallman portrait of Christ hanging up on the organ pipes at the front of the sanctuary ever since I can remember. Our new pastor wants it taken down, not because he thinks it's bad in and of itself, but because he says it's not conducive to welcoming varied ethnic groups to the church.

On another note, there's a great biography of Warner Sallman out that is a wonderful story, and it contains pictures of all of his art, some lesser known than others. I recommend reading it.

Oh yeah, preaching the word means sharing what Jesus did for us on the cross, so in essence Hollywood just preached the word!!

My reply to these statements, are of course, a simple one. A bush, a fish, apostles, and even angels, are all creations of God, and there is no scriptural prohibition against those things or beings. There is, however, warnings against idol worship, mysticism, and divination throughout the scriptures, as well as preaching another Gospel and another Jesus. The donkey, was of course, the easiest one because:


A) The donkey spoke His Word, and did not mix in his own words or the words of men as was done in the movie.

B) The donkey was one of God's creations, and was not a "mystical" soothsaying donkey.

C) The donkey was not elevated as co-redeemer or part of any salvation process.

Could you please provide the Scripture that states that unbelieving and unsaved people will present the Truth of Jesus Christ, accurately, and according to the Scriptural Jesus?
