In another thread, Askjo alleges modern Bible translations are gnostic. Is this true?

Askjo said:
No false accusation! I agree with AJ’s quotation. The Gnostics replaced “Jesus” with “God” during they produced their manuscripts in around 300 AD. This is where modern versions were derived. MV translators followed Gnostics’ steps.

Is this true?

Dictionary.com defines gnosticism as:

a group of ancient heresies, stressing escape from this world through the acquisition of esoteric knowledge.

If Askjo is correct, then modern Bible translations teach escape from this world through the acquisition of esoteric knowledge.

Dictionary.com defines esoteric as:

1. understood by or meant for only the select few who have special knowledge or interest; recondite: poetry full of esoteric allusions.
2. belonging to the select few
3. private; secret; confidential
4. (of a philosophical doctrine or the like) intended to be revealed only to the initiates of a group: the esoteric dictrines of Pythagoras.

Untrue??? You can't deny my research on gnosticism because I found many answers through many books and the Internet.

Askjo (or anyone else who believes modern Bible translations are gnostic), please offer some references, scriptural or otherwise, to support your claim. What "research" did you do, Askjo?

This is little more than mudslinging at best.

The "Gnostic Gospels" were found at Nag Hammadi. We have them and know the difference.

Yep. Near as I can tell this is a 1700 year old smear campaign against the so-called Gnostic teacher Origen of Alexandria. Origen's main crime seems to be that he took the following literal: Matthew 18:8-9. Origen had his sexual desire removed so he could serve the Lord. That is way to literal for most literalists :-(

I'd be willing to bet my next paycheck that most people don't understand what makes something Gnostic and how to define Gnostic belief.

That said, no I don't see that in MV. I don't see that in the KJV. I would ask for specific definitions (again most people don't really know what Gnosticism is) and examples of where the modern text differs greatly from the original languages. :)

Took the words right out of my mouth. :type:

Askjo, would you care to defend your allegation that modern Bible translations are gnostic? Or can we assume this is just another of your assertions that comes from your imagination and has absolutely no foundation?

It seems obvious that this is a hit and run by someone who has made an absurd and manifestly unprovable accusation.

It's not at all unusual for supporters of the KJVO myth to come up with absurd accusations and then remain silent when asked for evidence. It's normally useless to ask Askjo for any kind of evidence since there usually isn't one shred of evidence to back up those absurd accusations.

I would have first asked Askjo if he even knows what gnosticism is. I don't think people who understand gnosticism would claim that the MVs are gnostic.

Okay...good idea, Pastor Larry. Sorry I didn't respond more quickly, but I've been out of town and away from computers for a week.

Askjo, do you have a clue what gnosticism is? And is there any support whatsoever for your allegation that modern Bible translations are gnostic? Let's see some evidence and not just your opinion, Askjo.

Askjo, gnosticism is a system of religious beliefs whose main features are the belief that humans are divine souls trapped within a material world created by an imperfect god known as the Demiurge, a being that should never have come into existence, created when a female being named Sophia(Wisdom) gave birth to him by parthenogenesis.

This system existed before Jesus came, but later gnostics tried to incorporate Jesus & some of the men from Scripture into their system.

And believe me, not even the groddiest pseudo-Bible made today is gnostic!

However, there IS a Gnostic Bible! THAT'S ITS NAME! I haven't read it, & don't plan to, but it IS available on Amazon dot comm.

There's also a Satanic Bible written by Anton LeVey. But that doesn't mean we should add these to our libraries.

Definitely not anything for newer Christians to mess with. Main thing I wanted to do here was show Askjo to be incorrect about "gnostic" bibles.

Askjo STILL hasn't offered one shred of evidence modern translations are Gnostic. It's a good thing we're not holding our breath in anticipation.

Why did you not look for Gnostics through the Internet? Here is an example:
The New American Standard Version is a book which uses manuscripts corrupted with the Gnostic heresy dating back to the 2nd century AD. With men like Clement of Alexandria and Origen corrupting the Scriptures according to their Gnostic beliefs, what we have today are the descendants of these evil corruptions. The Gnostics disbelieved the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ and this is why we see His divine name and title dismembered in many verses. Unfortunately too many Christians listen to men like James White, Kenneth Barker, or D.A. Carson and just take their words as if they are Gospel.

Askjo,

The Gnostics wanted to lay claim of Jesus. They were the ones who thought themselves to be receiving new knowledge/Scripture from Jesus. Why would they want to leave out Jesus when they wanted Him exclusively?

BTW, it works both ways.

http://www.raptureready.com/rr-kjvo.html

"For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form" ( Colossians 2:9 NIV).

"For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily" (Colossians 2:9 KJV).

I guess we should conclude that the AV translators were gnostics.

Can someone please change my denomination to Baptist?

The Greek Text on this verse shows "him" but who told you to change the DIFFERENT word?
