OK...so: How do you know a song is "rock?" How do you define it? And what if your definition doesn't jive with someone else's? For instance...most of us here would say that Steve Green's music is pretty tame and traditional. But Bill Gothard rails against it...calls it worldly. So who's right?

(and let's keep in mind...we're talking in generalities here: We all admit there's some theologically vapid music, whether traditional or modern).

That's right SBC. I have prayed about it as has my husband. We both are constantly in prayer about our music since he is the worship pastor at our church - and we have daughters who are teens who enjoy music. Music is a large part of our lives and have been since before DH and I even started dating back in the 80s. We know our hearts. We know what we do pleases the Lord because we see the effects of that music in the lives of other believers. We've seen hearts broken by the songs that we've done. We've seen hearts turn back to the Lord in repentance. Ya don't get that from the Stone's "Satisfaction". :D

Good question. I listen to a lot of music that could be country or rock, r&b or rock, or any combination thereof. But I suspect his objection isn't so much to "rock" as it is to anything that sounds contemporary.

Let me turn the table a little bit and ask you the same question. How would you define rock and roll? What is everybody in this forum's definition of Rock and Roll? Where do you draw the line in worship?

Not sure about you guys, but we've been known to bite the heads off of bats during music time. It's pretty cool. Also once we passed around a bucket and asked everybody to spit in it, then the music minister drank it. When everybody REALLY gets fired up, our guitarist does a great Angus Young impression, convulsing all over the place while playing. When it's halloween Sunday, we rig up the drummer and his kit to overhead rigging and he flies over the audience and does a 45 minute drum solo instead of listening to the preacher. Our bass guy really likes Flea, so he will often get naked on stage in homage to him.

The craziest thing we ever did though, was play some Chris Tomlin songs and some folks were moved and ended up getting saved. Oh, the horror.

OK - I think I just threw up a little.....

If you could take out the words of your music what would it sound like? Would it sound like rock and roll? If it sounds like Rock and Roll then it is. If someone that was living on the street was to approach your car while you were playing your music, would they say that it is good Christian music that God likes or would they say that it was Rock and Roll.

Tell me, what DOES Christian music sound like?

I never knew it was a genre. Is it classical? Is it bluegrass (personally shuddering)? Is it southern Gospel (again, shuddering)? Is it only the hymns of the 18th and 19th century? Or is only the Psalms?

And I assume we are talking about music in the US. At our church, sometimes the music has a Carribean feel to it. Why? Because a significant portion of our congregants are from the Carribean - including our senior pastor. Is that OK?

Again, Christian music is "Christian" because of the words -- not because of the beat (or lack thereof).

Shuddering here as well.

I think Southern Gospel is definitely unbiblical because I don't like it. No not one bit! Yuk! I also don't like the big hair do's and toupees that go along with it.

My favorite group of ALL time is Casting Crowns. Tell me this isn't biblical.

WHO AM I?

Who am I , that the Lord of all the earth
would care to know my name?
Would care to feel my hurt.

Who am I, that the Bright and Morning Star
would choose to light the way
for my ever wandering heart?

Not because of who I am,
but because of what You've done,
not because of what I've done,
but because of who You are.

I am a flower quickly fading,
here today and gone tomorrow.
A wave tossed in the ocean,
a vapor in the wind.

Still You hear me when I'm calling.
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling,
and You've told me who I am.

I am Yours. I am Yours.

I would have problems with that in our church because it's too man centered to be worship. It's all about the person singing.

Now, if it's a song that inspires you or that you want to listen to for entertainment, that's another thing but I couldn't support it for worship.

I listen to this music when I drive. It is very inspiring to me. We mostly sing hymns at church.

Two songs we're doing this Sunday:

You are the One
Paul Baloche and Lincoln Brewster
2002 Integrity's Hosanna! Music/ASCAP and Integrity's Praise! Music/BMI

You're the One who made the heavens
You're the One who shaped the earth
You're the One who formed my heart long before my birth

I believe You'll always lead me
All my days have been ordained
All Your thoughts toward me are holy, full of love and grace

You are the One, you are holy
You are the One, you are worthy
You are the One, You are the One
Everlasting

You are the One, I will worship
You are the One I will serve all my days
You are the One, You are the One
Everlasting
Lord, You are the One.

Jesus Messiah
Chris Tomlin, Daniel Carson, Ed Cash, Jesse Reeves
Sixstep Music/Vamos Publishing/Worshiptogether.com

He became sin
Who knew no sin
That we might become His Righteousness
He humbled himself and carried the cross

Love so amazing
Love so amazing

Jesus Messiah
Name above all names
Blessed Redeemer
Emmanuel
The rescue for sinners
The ransom from Heaven
Jesus Messiah
Lord of all

His body the bread
His blood the wine
Broken and poured out all for love
The whole earth trembled
And the veil was torn

All our hope is in You
All our hope is in You
All the glory to You, God
The light of the world

Yeah, don't you just hate it when people have opinions that are different from yours?

I agree with corndoggy, it is all about God's grace. love and sovereignty (isn't that what worship music is?!?)...but there are those who will nit-pick the things they don't like and accurse them as being "worldly".

If you want to sing it, then that's up to you, but that's no reason to put me down and misrepresent what I said. I never said it was "worldly". In fact, I even told the person who brought it up that, although I would not support it in our worship service, it's fine if she wants to listen to it.

Please, Webdog, you're worthy of better behavior than that.

If this isn't the definition of worldly, I don't know what is. I'll take a broken, insignificant view of self as worship any day, as I believe God does as well. To not support this view is mind boggling.
