firefox v. google chrome

I just downloaded chrome, and I have been using firefox, which has been freezing up and crashing on me. Who uses chrome, and do you like it? It takes some getting used to...

I use Firefox most of the time. I have used Chrome a few times, but have not made up my mind about it yet. I have had a bit of trouble on some web sites with Chrome not showing the graphics. I probably need to tweek it in some way.

I used chrome for a few weeks when I still had a windows box. It was alright, I really liked some of the features, especially dragging a tab to drop a new window. But it did have some problems with rendering some webpages.

Once I removed windows from my computer, chrome was no longer an option since they do not offer it for Linux.

Google killed Chrome for me when they installed their updater with it. I want control of what goes into my computer and they did not ask for permission.

I still use Firefox and plan on staying with it. 3.5.2 is great and I have mine very customized... something you can't do with the others.

I think when I installed it, they give an option for that now. I declined.

Maybe it is the new updated version...I wish I could go back to the version I had 2 updates ago, it was much better.

It sounds like a mal-ware/spy-ware issue. Especially the part about it running in the background. If you have rebooted and it is still an issue, you may want to consider doing a system restore from a save point prior to the issue. Another option is to uninstall and reinstall firefox, something may not have extracted correctly after the last update.

Well, call me conservative.. but I just progressed this week to using firefox... my son talked me into it... i was using IE 6 before.. then I saw on Youtube where IE 6 is becoming incompatible with Youtube, so I chose firefox.

I LOVE IT.. The only add ons I have are the adblocker and the weather one from weather.com

Trotter, how have you customized firefox? What would you suggest?

Mine is a little off of the standard issue.

The extensions you should get as a bare minimum are:

• NoScript
• Adblock Plus
• Flashblock
• WOT
• Fasterfox

Other extensions on my "must-have" list:

• All-in-One Sidebar
• BBCodeXtra (an amazing extension... trust me)
• Download Statusbar
• Nightly Tester Tools (to make non-updated extensions work when Firefox updates)
• Paste and Go 2
• Popup Resize
• Smiley Xtra (goes great with BBCodeXtra)
• Yahoo! Mail Notifier (checks my yahoo account)
• Gmail Notifier (checks my Gmail account)
• Aging Tabs

Firefox will let you move almost everything. on mine I moved my navigation toolbar elements on to the bookmark toolbar and unselected the navigation one to save space. I moved my address bar and search bar to the upper toolbar as well. I added several buttons to my sidebar (some extensions are just extra buttons). The extension Tiny Menu removes the menu items and puts them into a dropdown menu beside my address bar.

The stuff at the bottom of my Firefox are stuff from extensions... Fasterfox, Greasemonkey, IE Tab, McAfee SiteAdvisor (good, but not available through Mozilla), NoScript, Read It Later, ScreenGrab, ShowIP, Transate, Yes Popups, Gmail Notifier, and Yahoo Mail Notifier.

Oh, and I am running Windows 7, so you can see what the taskbar looks like.

The less extensions you install, the faster firefox will boot up. So I try to keep mine fairly slim nowadays. When I was into web design, though, I had a ton of extensions to help me with development.

Now, here's what I have active:
* DownloaderHelper
* Fireform
* Friendbar
* IE Tab (I don't use this much anymore, I can probably disable it)
* Plain Text Links
* Scrapbook
* StumbleUpon (I should probably disable this one too)
* Swaptree
* Xmarks

Concerning the issue with Firefox not restarting because it says it is still running. This is usually due to trying to restart Firefox too soon after closing it. The "process" is still running in the background. A lot of applications do this, actually, but usually it's not an issue because you don't want to restart the application right away. But here's a quick fix if you ever get that error.

1) Hold ctrl+alt and hit delete. This will bring up the task manager
2) Click the "Processes" tab at the top
3) Click "firefox.exe"
4) Click "End Process" at the bottom
5) Click "Yes" in the dialogue that pops up

Now you can restart Firefox. You can also close the task manager.
