I've tried many, and the two I like the most are AVG Anti Virus, and Lavasoft Ad-Aware. They have freeware versions for single end users.

For preventative measures, look at SpyBot amd SUPERAntispyware. Both are free.

SpyBot has an "Immunize" feature that blocks several thousand varients of spyware/adware. SUPERAntiviris is an active protection program that watches for any spyware and acts uon it.

For cleaning a system infected with spyware, I use Malwarebyets Anti-Malware, along with SpyBot and Ad Aware, if it is not too severe. If the computer is in rough shape, or seems to have something that has really dug in, I go to a website of a friend of mine and go through the process he has there. He knows his stuff and is the security guy on the forum I help run. Spyware-Asylum

For overall protection, I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I have used it since it started beta testing and have found it to be very light on resources and a very good anti-virus/anti-malware utility. It replaces Windows defender as well as being an anti-virus. It is also free.
