Major events in the last 50 years

I have to go with the rise of digital technology. Runner ups would be the Vietnam War, JFK assassination, and the fall of Communism.

 

Most consequential events in US history:

Gary Powers/U2 Spy Plane incident in 1960. This was the first time in US history that a president (Eisenhower) had made it an official policy of his administration to lie to the public and to do so repeatedly in the name of "national defense". Eisenhower deeply regretted what he had done and feared that he had set a new precedent in which presidents would make it a policy to lie. His fears were justified as the Vietnam war and Watergate scandals both came about because of lying in the name of national defense.

Kennedy Assasination in 1963. The assasination was not that consequential in and of itself because Kennedy was not that consequential of a president. However, that weekend marked a change from Americans getting their news from newspapers to getting it from TV.

Most consequential event in world history:

The fall of the Berlin wall. This marked then end of the post-war struggle between communism and western-style freedom and it opened the door to a new struggle between western countries and Islam. The struggle between freedom and communism went on for just shy of 50 years. The new struggle is very new and I don't think we yet understand what a threat it is to us. When we come to understand it, it will be a long struggle.

 

I got saved. As to it's future impact, we have yet to see.

 

Yes, his Vice-President learned well.

 

OTOH The Vietnam experience even influences our approach to fighting the war on terrorism

The collapse of Communism

 

I totally agree. It is the "Great Society" that led too many people of a great nation into thinking they had to do nothing to get something, because the Government would provide. What they failed to realize is that something was taken away from those who have earned it.

This has evolved into a nation full of people who want instant gratification. A nation where liberals put party ahead of what is good for that nation. A nation where even some of the people who call themselves Christian do not believe they are responsible for murdering children in the womb even tho they vote for the very politicians that support it.

I sure am glad for the rainbow because I get the urge to build an Ark.

 

Fall of communism, rise of militant Islam, computer age.

I notice there are a lot of props for computer age, internet, etc. - those are all good, but I don't think of them as "events." I think of events as things that happen in a day or a series of days. My list in no particular order:

1. 9/11
2. JFK
3. Berlin Wall
4. Tianamen Square
5. Roe v. Wade
6. 6-Day War (Israel)
7. Reagan Elected
8. Obama Elected
9. GWB Elected
10. Moon Landing
11. Fall of USSR
12. Tigers win World Series - 1968 and 1984.

 

Another one that has had big impact here in the U.S. in how we conduct our day-to-day lives:

I'm trying my best to come up with some profound answer
and have none.

Rather than appear speechless, however, (and those of you who 'know me' on these boards may have figured out) that is almost an impossibility, here goes:

Our increasing involvement with the UN.... towards the unified consensus and standards for the nations of the world over their individual sovereignty.

Actions of our government against its own citizens in cases like Ruby Ridge, WACO, and The church at Salem.... for examples...... which have gone with little outcry from the people.

The consolidation of wealth and control by monopolies of corporate interest, banking, and media.

And the biggest of all, changes which followed in the decisions made as our response to September 11, 2001.

Leaving the Biblical doctrines of salvation in Jesus Christ and the ministries of the church to substitute the doctrines of man and conforming to the patterns set by the powers in this world and its gods.

I'm not sure that communism can be honestly attempted until Jesus returns.

 

Airline deregulation.
The rise of conservative talk radio and sister outlets such as Fox News.
The ever-changing price of a gallon of gasoline (I still wonder how much high prices are a result of oil company mergers in the last 10-15 years).
The dreaded "BCS" in major college football.
The resurgence/takeover in the SBC.

From a medical perspective
1. First commercial Computed Tomography (CT) machine in 1972

3. First IVF baby July 25, 1978
4. Human Genome Project started in 1990

There were several medical whoppers just outside of the 50 years including penicillin and Jonas Salk's polio vaccine.
