How do you reconcile 2 King 22:20 and 2 Kings 23:29?

My friend, I believe the disaster that Josiah would be spared from was the prophecy of the completed destruction of Jerusalem and captivity into Babylon. During that seige horrible things occurred. Cannibalism, His children killed before his eyes before gouging out his eyes, hooks into their flesh leading them into captivity.

In contrast this king simply died a honorable warrior's death.

Isn't the implication that his death would be peaceful? Instead it seems pretty violent. Though it is true Josiah missed out on the terrible destruction of Jerusalem.

Why wasn't the prophet "put down"?

Perhaps 2 Chronicles 35:20-24 sheds a little more light on the situation. Neco warned Josiah not to engage him in battle, that he was doing God's work. Josiah didn't listen.

v.22 "However, Josiah would not turn away from him, but disguised himself in order to make war with him; nor did he listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God...."

So, God warned him not to get involved. He didn't listen and he was killed.
