Not after the fact, since it would affect the outcome of the game. That said, it seems like a good idea to have IR implemented for soccer. However, I know very little about soccer, so I'm not sure how IR would affect the game, etc.

Andy, define "after the fact" just so I know we're on the same page here.

You're wrong. You are biased. No way you'd be arguing this vehemently if this were a Twin, and who knows, maybe I'd feel differently if this happened to a Red (but I'm 95% sure I'd feel the same way).
    It's still a team sport.
    Yes, thank you.
And BB rules had just that, esp in women's bball, and got rid of it only the last 30-40 years or so.

The other part of the bball analogy isn't germane. You're talking about interrupting the course of a move/play to stop and have someone else do something. No, I wouldn't be for a baserunner to run from home plate after Prince Fielder hit the ball. But to make the argument that we cannot have specialized positions because that does something to the integrity of the game doesn't hold water since that doesn't affect Soccer, Hockey, Football, Curling, etc.

Isn't it interesting that the AL seems to have better success than the NL esp in IL play? Buck Showalter said it was precisely the DH that made this so. It's a point worth considering. A 26 man roster is made up of your 26 best players in the AL. But in the NL because you have to hit for your P, your bench is made up of situational players. Agree or not, there's some validity.

By the way, the NL has the DH, they're called Pinch Hitters. So Larry, do you think a PH should be done away with? Why not?

Now we're way off topic :)

It's interesting that you have to go to some other sport to defend the DH, Tom. They're completely different sports with completely different rules, but, somehow, the rules for football specialist positions should somehow apply to baseball. Baseball was never meant to be played with a DH.

and QBs were usually the PK and/or P. I was merely drawing the analogy to prove how selective we are when it comes to blindness re: DH. And there was very early support for the DH going back to the early 1900s.

Anyway, we're off topic -if anyone wantts to talk more, lets start a thread.

Maybe I wouldn't be arguing quite as much if it happened to a Twin (because you're right - I wouldn't care as much), but it wouldn't change my position at all - I'd still think Selig should overturn the call. So I guess you'll have to take my word for it.

After the game was official. Soccer has no IR, correct? So the only way it could've been overturned was by some FIFA commissioner, right? I would not be in favor of that, generally.

Although you could argue that it was the very last play of the game and reverse it. I don't know - was it an egregious call? I don't know enough about soccer. And I don't really think the comparison is valid - comparing baseball to soccer is like comparing Mozart to Lady Gaga.

To the best of my knowledge there is no IR in soccer. Yes, it was quite egregious in that people are still looking for the call and no explanation is given in that soccer refs will call fouls but do not specify on whom - if it was indeed a foul. That's the thing. Could've been offsides or anything.

    What...you don't have Crew season tix? :)

And you really want to drop a Lady Gaga reference after her carousing in the Yankee clubhouse recently :tongue3:
