Lowest gas prices you remember

27 cents a gallon. I think I was making $65/week. that's $1.63/hour or 6 gallons/hour? Gas is now about $3/gal so the equivalent pay is about $18/hour. In other words, in the last 50 years the cost of gas in terms of work hours has only doubled. Not bad, all things considered.

 

But...tax at the pumps has more than tripled!!!!

When I started driving, gas was about 35 cents per gallon. I paid over $3 per gallon today, although I've seen higher than that. In Florida I was only a 10 minute drive from a Walmart and only 20-30 minutes drive from two other Walmart. There are three Walmarts near me too, if you think 40-50 is near.

Exactly! The normal price was between .25 cents and .32 cents.

 

Well, I can get a little more than half a tank for $5.00, but it's the tank on my motorcycle, not my truck! :laugh:

 

Since I quit buying "commodity" gas I have never had fuel injector problems. On the Left Coast, only Chevon, Shell, and Union meet Japanese standards. The extra 3% or 4% is worth the cost.

 

Well I can't remember a price per gallon, but I can remember my dad saying "put in a dollar's worth" and then driving around all Sunday afternoon, to church that night and him still have enough to get to work the next day!

 

I remember before I started driving, my brother and I would cut yards, gas at the sinclair station was a around 20- 25 cents a gallon. I remember 14-16 cents during gas wars.
We would get 15 cents worth and split a 10 cent coke or Dr. Pepper (depending on who's turn it was to pick) and go cut a yard for 2 dollars or 2.50 if we raked. On Saturday we could pick up 5-6 yards and be rolling in dough. We cut yards year around in Houston with a slow down in winter. Kids don't cut yards anymore, at least around here

 

1s/11d per gall. That's one shilling and eleven pence per UK gallon, the equivalent (I think) of about 17 cents. Mind you, that was back in the 1950s!

As you may know, we have for a long time now used a currency of just pounds and pence, and petrol today is sold by the litre.

Yes, but I should make clear that in those days, I wore short trousers, and had a long time to wait before I was old enough to drive, and needed to buy petrol/gas.

 

I'm with most people. I remember it being around .25 a gallon. I remember when it hit 1.00 for the first time, because my brother made us start chipping in for gas when we went out in his car.

I remember that when I was a kid, we had to drive to Green Springs, all the way on the other side of Birmingham, to go to the movies. We also played baseball at the big park in Green Springs, so we were really upset when it went up over a dollar.

 

Yeah, I still remember my grandfather giving my sister $5 for gas and how thrilled she was that that would get her through the week (back and forth to school, work, church, and a little left over for riding around with her friends).

 

Last night on Larry's Country Diner, they said that in 1970, a gallon of gas cost $.36 .

 

....so what was the average wage back then?

 

They said, but I don't remember.
