Biblically How Should A baptist Church Deal With Pentacostal Theologies Coming In?

just looking for some Pastoral/Theological 'advise" for this situaition at my local baptist Church...

There is a pentacostal minister who has been involved in/with "Healing/Delieverance" Ministries in his circles, but has been attending our Church past several Months... His wife and entire Family have been attending, and believe will be trying to become members...

heres the main question...

I am part of the pastoral prayer team at the Church, and this man has become more and more agressive in trying to make us see "Full Gospel" message... We do pray for those who come forward to be healed, but believe that the Lord heals in a multitude of ways, while he tells us lack of faith, receive and believe, its all in the atonement ... Also chides us for not being a "KJV" Church...

I have brought this concern up to my Pastor and some Elders, and expressed concern that in his zeal might be "polluting" us....
the man did confront our Pastor, and has been trying to convice him to "lead" Church to more of "Full Gospel" message...

I am a "Bapticostalist", and have tried to reason with the man that I do know where he is coming from, but that I now believe that the Bible is NOT way he is intrepreting it...
Spoke to him past Sunday, he compared me to when Pharisees oppossed work of Jesus in their midst.. I tried to share with him that ALL experiences must be grounded/proved via Bible, not that Experiences equal to Bible..

was I wrong to confront him? Should he even be allowed to keep on attending if he keeps this message going on?

Drive him by the local hospital and ask him to empty the rooms by divine healing... Make a video of his vain attempts. :wavey:

Actually, this is the sort of person that would give me second guesses about membership. He is free to attend, but to become a member implies that he and the church are on the same page in a covenanted way.

Hi Jesusfan, I think part of your answer is provided in Ephesians 4:1-6. There is "one faith" and therefore we should stand firm with our understanding of that one faith. So, for example, if a Calvinist and a non-Calvinist disagree, they should seek to find a mutual understanding of the one faith, and not compromise what they believe is the truth.

Bottom line, if we disagree over things that make us uncomfortable, such as style of worship, we should change our view and allow say drums, but we are called to defend the gospel as we understand the gospel, we cannot have unity in the faith, if we allow two faiths to be presented as truth, a double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

While I think the man certainly has the right to believe whatever he wants to believe, by coming into a church and trying to change the doctrines already established, and accusing members of being Pharisees, he is a trouble maker and a divisive person. Instead of encouraging unity, he is dividing. The bible speaks strongly against people like this.

Our church would never admit him to membership. He would already be running afoul of our Covenant and he is clearly not in line with our Statement of Faith.

By the way, if you have those things and use them, they become a great and important tool for maintaining the unity of the church.

Our Elders would interview him for membership and if he insisted on the things that you have here written, we wouldn't accept his application for membership. It is that simple.

So, my suggestion, is that you don't admit him to membership.

He sholdn't be admitted to membership because he isn't a Baptist and doesn't believe what your church believes. He should be told the clear position of the church and shown the door if he doesn't want to change his position.

Think that is where my Church has some "wiggle room:, as we are not officially saying that Spiritual Gifts ceased in their operation, do NOT practice them in the assembly but allow for in private settings....
Would say that we are "ignorant" of these things, but we are definitly NOT a Charasmatic Church, and do NOT by into "full gospel/delierance/healing ministries" etc...

That is his point of contention, sees Tongues as eveidence of another blessing, that God will always heal because it is his :divine will"...
that is why I got tagged as a Pharisee, since tried to show him that IF tongues were for today, that they would JUST be a gift of Holy Spirit, and NOT sign of anything "special/extra"
We do believe God can choose to heal, but that there are no "faith healers" today...
he keeps saying we are "to legalist/traditional" not willing to move with God in his program!

And I'm also curious about what you will do if this fella is admitted to membership in your church. Will you stay?

And, one other thing. Will your church require that he be rebaptized?

I would ask him:

If we are too legalist/traditional then why are you here?

Are you here to "convert" us to your point of view when you know we already do not agree?

If so, are you not the man sowing dissension and discord in our church? Do you know what terrible things the Bible has to say about you in that case?

I'm having some fun on your account, but I think that some of the issues here are fairly clear. It almost appears as if you are desperate for new members (as are many smaller churches -- been there, would have had a t-shirt if we could have afforded one :laugh: ).

Think that he has talked to the individual, and informed him that we will continue to go on same way as right now, welcome to stay but must agree to abide by the accepted/held doctrines
