Another Bailout

Yup, another taxpayer bailout may be in store. Not GM, nor Harley Davidson, nor a bank.

Roman Catholic elementary and high schools.

Yup, enrollment is down. Some are being closed. Some merged (In my town, they even merged a boys' school with one of their girls' schools!)

OK, I'm talking about the prospect of vouchers. (I'm not Baptist, but I know Baptists were a mega force in opposing taxes being given to Catholic schools, up until the last 2-3 decades.)

How would everyone here feel about tuition vouchers? Even if you LIKE the idea of them, how would you feel knowing that your money is the salvation of the Vatican's schools in America?

Thoughts? I hope you agree with my take on the matter, but if you don't I'd still like your input. This still is the USA!

GOOD! If you want your kids to learn something, send them to a Catholic school. At least they will know how to read, write, and do numbers when they graduate from grade school.

I concur - parents have a right to a good education for their kids - and it appears that private/religious schools are doing a pretty good job.

Why - they actually have rules that must be obeyed, among other things

I hope the Catholic schools survive, BUT NOT through government assistance. Any private school that takes government money compromises its independence, the very reason it exists in the first place. They will require certain levels of achievement, a certain ethnic mix in the student population, and probably certain curriculum materials. If you don’t comply, they yank their funds which more often than not become an essential source of money for the school’s operation.

I’m also opposed to vouchers for much the same reason. It’s just an indirect way of providing government support for private schools. Private schools, including Catholic schools, are a positive force in our society but by taking government money their influence will be weakened.

As "government" is made up of -politicians-, I'd think clergy would want to run, run, run far away.

use this as a response to anyone who thinks something comes with no strings attached.

Lastly, if independence from politicians, and money with strings attached, is not THE difference between Christianity in America and Christianity in Europe, what is?

For that matter, the difference between Protestantism and Catholicism.

How does Nevada get from "private or parochial" schools to "Catholic schools"?

The only difference is one of degrees. Vouchers is federal aid lite--nothing more, nothing less.

Most schools that would benifit from vouchers would be Roman Catholic.

(Plus, some cult schools. Plus, other religious group's schools. None should entangle themselves with politicians and politicians money.)

Taxes for Sharia?

There has already been trouble with tax dollars being used to fund religious instruction, in certain charter schools. Yes, charter schools are not the same as voucher programs (though a step down the same road). Charter schools are forbidden by law from teaching religion, even though they may be operated by religious groups. Such as Muslims . .

While I totally oppose clergy becoming -beholden to politicians- for income, in this thread I am -mostly- curious how folks feel about funding Roman Catholicism. As Catholic schools are the main form of private secondary education in the USA. That's what will happen, in effect.
