One Holiday At A Time?

There's almost no money to be made for Veterans' Day. For Thanksgiving, it's just in sales of food and a little harvest decor. But Christmas... gifts-- for men, women boys, girls, toddlers, teens, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, coworkers... trees, lights, outdoor displays, candy, cookies, cakes, wrapping paper, bows, CD's, DVD's, stockings and everything go in them except the oft-most appropriate (coal). So why do the stores emphasize the Christmas theme before a few others? $$$$$$$

 

I agree on the Christmas commercialism. Nothing much mentioned about Armistice Day here either.

That stupid "Happy Holidays" offends me too. I say "God bless you" when out and about. I say it automatically when I go to an Indian goods shop run by a Muslim family....they have not gone up in flames about it, only the godless seem to have an issue. The God of my faith is certainly not that of the Muslims.

 

For many people Thanksgiving is when they celebrate Christmas with parts of their family. For instance, I live in Florida, my children in Chicago. Travel in December is iffy between here and there, so we often spend Thanksgiving together and celebrate our Christmas with one another then. There are many times when our tree and decorations are up on Thanksgiving because that's when we celebrate together.

Traditionally Christmas decor goes up right after Halloween as people begin preparing for the holiday season. If you asked me, I'd prefer that Halloween not be celebrated as a holiday. Eliminate that one, why give any place to Satan?

I love Christmas, but then we don't go all out crazy in commercialism and gift giving. I love celebrating my Lord. So, no Bah Humbug here.

 

I was pretty happy with our local stores here. Veterans Day displays were all over, lots of flags and such for sale in the shops. I've not seen lots of Christmas stuff yet, but enough to let me know that holiday is just around the corner.

I try to have all my Christmas shopping done and even wrapped by Halloween, so I do like to find the giftwrap in the stores early so I can make use of it. Also, my church participates in Operation Christmas Child and we had to have our shoeboxes ready to ship by yesterday. I was glad we were able to find Christmas cards, wrapping, and such for that even though it's early. We have to ship the boxes early for the children to get them on time.

I did see a few houses that already have their Christmas lights and inflatable yard items. To that I say, "let's get past Thanksgiving first!"

Once I'm done, I avoid the crowds and stores until January as much as possible. That way I can actually ENJOY the season instead of rushing around at the last minute.
