Theology of Repentance: Sermon tomorrow

Second month in a row I get to preach in the nursing home. This time I am preaching on repentance by my own choosing. I have skimmed my books and it appears that the best and most practical look on this doctrine comes from a James MacDonald work. I also found some insight in the Gospel According to Jesus, but that book may be way to academic for a evangelistic style sermon. MacDonald appears to be far more practical than MacArthur. Ideally it would be best if I found something on this topic by David Jeremiah but from the best of my knowledge his book Captured by Grace does not cover the doctrine of repentance.

Most of my preaching experience has been on the streets as I have open aired Way of the Master style dozens of times. If someone has some insight in a book below that I have but missed please let me know. Thanks..

Maybe I am missing something, but it seems like you're getting your sermons from books and other preachers. I know from your other posts that you study the Scriptures, but I'd take a passage a Scripture and preach that, rather than what someone has said about a Biblical doctrine.

Are you saying that we should not use commentaries and books to aide us in our sermons? No I wont be copying the style of another preacher as I have my own style. MacArthur is very very very exegetical and academic. I am not this way as I prefer to have a personality when I preach and be practical. For this I think a James MacDonald is a better choice.

I had the same thought as Tom when reading your post. You may not have intended it but it gives the vibe you are especially interested in books. I do not think he was saying that books or commentaries are bad, but he was emphasizing the value in being lost in Scripture over books. I wouldn't make this assumption on you (I dont think he was either), but maybe the best question is > what have you gathered from Scripture on the sermon in regards to Scripture? Are you exegeting a passage or preaching a topic?

I am an evangelist primarily. I think I will just preach topically. Some say we should only do expository sermons and not topical. However I have heard Charles Stanley & Erwin Lutzer preach many good topical sermons.

I am not much on books other then the bible, but I would suggest that any message you give it should always be done as a teaching mode. It does little good just to spew facts and the people end up not learning from a message. All Great preachers are always great teachers and that requires bringing the message down to the level of the people.

Not at all... but it is always better to go from your own Bible study and what the Lord is teaching you to the commentaries, rather than from the commentaries to the Scripture.

All young preachers go thru what you're going thru. We alll study the sermons of the preachers we consider great. But over time, we, hopefully, learn to go to the Scriptures first. I use all those you mention except for the Way of the Master. So I like to use commentaries.

I have an outline but its only a guide as I usually will add points as I preach not in the outline. In seminary they taught us to preach a certain way, and I have Bryan Chappell's book and a book by a IFB evangelist on the topic of preaching. However as an evangelist my sermons most of the time are with that theme and style in nature. Chappell is no evangelist so I stray from his instructions a bit.
