21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

It appears Jesus is speaking of when he dies the disciples will not be able to see him and they will be very sorrowful, but their sorrow will be short lived and will be turned to joy.

Is Jesus comparing his resurrection to a woman giving birth to her man child that brings forth joy?

Yes....you have it correct...this is one of the last times he is explaining of the events of the cross. He has basically concluded his public ministry and is preparing them for what will soon take place.:thumbsup:

I believe Jesus is speaking of the pain they will suffer because of His death and joy because of His resurection.

He is speaking of the joy that follows the pain. The joy makes the pain seem small although at the time ...it is painful.....afterward it does not come to mind as much.

Do you think Jesus could have had the following in mind when he was speaking in John 16?

Hosea 13:13,14 The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he [is] an unwise son; for he should not stay long in [the place of] the breaking forth of children. I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

Just when did he ransom them from the power of the grave and redeem them from death, giving them joy.

Is his resurrection spoken of in terms of a birth?
