Members of the House of Representatives are being told that no holiday greetings, including “Merry Christmas,” can be sent out in official mail.

According to the Washington Examiner, members who submit official mailings for review by the congressional franking commission that reviews all congressional mail to determine if it can be "franked," or paid for with tax dollars, are being told that no holiday greetings, including "Merry Christmas," can be sent.

I would prefer if they did not use our tax dollars for any unnecessary communications. I certainly don't want to pay for them to send out Christmas cards.

The newsletters will go out regardless. There will be no tax dollars saved by replacing the words 'Merry Christmas' with 'Happy Holidays'.

At least it says "No Holiday Greetings", instead of just no "Merry Christmas". I think it's perfectly ok to stop all holiday greetings in official mail.

Political correctness run amok

I disagree. They are actually making a good decision to say that you can't use federal funds to send personal greetings. It doesn't say to leave out "Merry Christmas" (contrary to what appears as the thread title), it says to not send out ANY holiday greetings.

From the article:
"Members of Congress send millions of dollars worth of mail to constituents every year, but there are official rules that govern what can and cannot be said in those mailings..."I called the commission to ask for clarification and was told no 'Merry Christmas.' Also told cannot say 'Happy New Year' but can say 'have a happy new year"

The mailings will not stop, they are only restricting what can be said.

This is a greeting in a mailing for other reasons. They are not sending out Christmas cards.

Even so, as long as they are cutting out all holiday greetings, and it is fair across the board, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. If they aren't being fair, then there is.

Does that mean that they no longer mention Thanksgiving Day?

How about refraining from a mention of Martin Luther King Day. That may offend those who think King should not be worthy of a holiday.

Lets not mention Memorial Day -we do not want to offend any peace protesters.

And does that mean that the President is no longer allowed to send out his annual holiday greeting?

Christmas is not only a spiritual celebration for Christians - but it is also part of the American culture.

PC gone way too far

Yes!

And it's not saying they can't send out Christmas cards personally - just not official ones that are on our dime.

Quotes from the memo:

“You may make reference to the season as a whole using language along the lines of 'Have a safe and happy holiday season.' It may only be incidental to the piece rather than the primary purpose of the communication."

"Currently, incidental use of the phrase Happy Holidays is permissible, but Merry Christmas is not," said Salley Wood.

Now, I can understand people not wanting their tax dollars being spent on personal Christmas cards. But, what is going on here is more than that. First, if it is merely an incidental greeting and not the primary purpose of the piece of mail exactly WHAT is the problem??? Second, WHY is okay to say “Have a safe and happy holiday season” but NOT “Merry Christmas” in that incidental greeting??? One would have be blind after evaluating that memo to NOT see this as an attack against Christianity!

Again. no dollar savings, just politically correct use of language.
