There are those on this forum who insist that sin must be restricted only and merely to willful transgression of the law - 1 Jn. 4:6.
However, that is not the only definition of sin because it is not the only way the law can be violated.
1. Sin is defined by OMISSION or COMING SHORT or not doing what the law requires - Rom. 3:23
"For all have sinned and COME SHORT of the glory of God" - Rom. 3:23
1 Cor. 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
2. Sin is the condition of the heart even if the act considered by the heart is not performed - Mt. 5:
Mt. 5:27 ¶ Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Mt. 5:21....Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: 22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment:
3. Sin is everything said and done due to a sinful motive in the heart - Rom. 3:23; I Cor. 10:31
Jer 17:10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Mt. 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
Ec 9:3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
Pr 12:20 Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy.
Pr 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Mt 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
4. Whatsoever is not of faith is sin - Rom. 14:21 - meaning according to context if you cannot do something in full confidence in regard to your conscience it is sin!
Rom. 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
