Bonfire of the Vanities

In a variation on the theme of Acts 19:19:

Revival sweeps the Northeast. No institution is unaffected. The Ivy League schools are hit hard. Hundreds if not thousands of students and some faculty pile up their decidedly anti-theistic and Naturalistic textbooks and stage their own bonfire of the vanities.

How would CNN cover the story? FOX? How would the discussion go on the ol' BB?

CNN would treat it as similar to the Nazi book-burning in the 1930s and an act of anti-intellectualism fueled by backwater ignorant boobs. The book-burners, of course, would be tagged as a typical fundamentalist.

Fox would interview the opponents, but would also seek out some intelligent spokesman for the book-burners for an explanation.

"In an effort to protest the rising cost of fuel in Modern America, students take to burning books for heat. The effort is short-lived, however, and the Environmental Affairs Office will be heading up the investigation of the incident. It is expected that fines will be levied for introducing pollutants into the atmosphere and ground water samples will be taken to determine if there are long-lasting effects on public drinking water."

Fox would bring a bag of marshmallows and join in the party, then debate whether marshmallows taste better roasted over the fire of books or over the fire of apple wood. In the background, one person would be yelling about religious rights, but they would get tuned out on the grounds that we already have those rights.
