verses 9-20...are somewhat in dispute....but that does not change the teaching of the rest of the NT on this issue,as the context in Mk 16 was...he spoke to the 11...in verse 11.

This issue is a settled issue. The Signs of an Apostle were just that...signs of an Apostle....not signs of you.

Since there is some dispute, I'd hesitate to build a doctrine or practice from those scriptures.

And I'm sure not going to drink poison to test their validity. And I'm leavin' the snakes alone.

Yes...this is a massive verse.....if everyone under the sun was supposed to do signs...this verse would not have the same meaning!

Then see in Acts...just about every time it says this;

3Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands

there were thousands of christians at this time...but the scripture shows by the hands of the apostles were the signs done...mostly to those who believed the apostolic word...fulfilling mk16.

The textbook answer is no, we do not base doctrine on the bracketed parts of our translations. But, where the same doctrine is also taught from other non-bracketed passages, then the doctrine can be taught and supported in part by reference to these questionable passages.

Verse 9 says Jesus saw Mary Magdalene first. Is that supported elsewhere? Nope, but Jesus did appear to her that morning.

Did Jesus drive seven demons out of Mary Magdalene? Yes, Luke 8:2

Did Mary Magdalene go and tell others what she had seen? Yes John 20:11-18.

If we study the passage, seeking parallel assertions we find much of the passage presents valid assertions, but not all are supported elsewhere. These exceptions should not be taught as doctrine.

I think his first appearance was to some of the women initially returning from the empty tomb (Matthew 28:8), then to Mary Magdalene after returning to the tomb with Peter and John.
