My current job is a good fit for myself, and I get along with everyone at my workplace which is also another good thing. However the MAJOR drawback is that I work 2nd shift (3:45p-12:15am) and 80% of the time on saturdays. I have refused to work sunday (the Lord's Day under any circumstance) and I communicated that with them upfront. I only would work on the Lord's Day if I were in a occupation that required it such as safety, law enforcement, gas stations, medical, etc..

While my checks are good its getting very very difficult to spend time with my church and 90% of their activities are on friday nights, and or at nights as most people work at first shift jobs. Its also getting very difficult to spend time with my current friends, whom also work first shift, as do most people. I wish I could move to first shift, however the job they hired me for is for 2nd shift. I desire to pay back my debts, however this is not important than the other things mentioned earlier. Also according to the Bible there is no promise or guarantee by either Jesus or Paul that we will be problem and or trouble free in life. Having debts is a part of reality, and I can be thankful that I can at least make a payment on mine, as many cannot.

So what should I do? Presently I am saving every check so if I were to move to another company I will have a backup fund. Thanks..

Here's what most responsible people would do:

1. Stay in your current job and continue to pay your debt.
2. Look for another job at the same time.
3. If you find a good fit, make the move.

Regardless of what you say, paying your debt is more important that hanging out with friends or going to the Friday Night singles event at church.

Yes, we are not promised a rose garden but when we create the garbage dump, it is OUR responsibility to clean it up.

Your first responsibility is to God - not the church.

Your second responsibility is to fulfill your obligations including your job which will help you to fulfill the other obligations - the debt you incurred.

Your last responsibility is to hang out with friends.

Having debt is not a part of reality but instead living above your means and not making enough money. If you are making a decent wage, cut back, pay off your debts then look for another job. You say that God doesn't promise that we will be trouble free in life - then apply it to your job/social situation and suck it up. :)

This is not Scriptural. EVERY day is a day unto the Lord. You are not being more holy, just, or righteous keeping one day, when it is everyday.

You need to rethink your priorities in light of testimony to the fellow workers who have to cover for your attempt at self righteousness.

You are being so immaturely silly to put social aspects above the work God has granted you the ability to do. Work the job you were hired to work, and if the employer requires more, carry the burden twice as far - Just as the Lord Jesus Christ expressed.

I desire to pay back my debts, however this is not important than the other things mentioned earlier.

It is no wonder you struggle!!!

At each point in this post is a clear violation of Scripture!!!!

"Owe no man anything" is a principle the Scriptures teach. You work until your debts are paid.

You refrain from going into more debt until your debts are paid.

Do NOT expect the leadership and blessings of God upon your life if you violate Scriptural principle.

Thanks..

You should be thankful to have a job and quit coming to the forum asking for advice on a matter that YOU KNOW the Scriptural principles.

Keep the job and work at every opportunity the employer offers for that is Scriptural. It is also a good testimony to the society of the workplace.

Do NOT be consumed by the social aspects of the assembly, they are basically unimportant when it comes to Godliness and righteousness.

Pay off the debts and refrain from going into debt. You cannot expect the blessings of God in more areas and living if you are not faithful in the few He has given you.

If you are happy with your job, stay there. if not continue looking. If you have Christ first in your life your priorities will fall into the right place. Christ and Church are not synonymous. You sound like a young person, don't spend the next 30 years being unhappy.

Agree 100% with others. Pay your debts. Everything else comes second to that since you personally assumed the responsibility for them when you went into debt.

On a side note: You are blessed to have a decent job in this economy. I don't know about other areas, but around here there are men who'd be on their knees, thanking God, if they could find a job like the one you describe.

This is not exactly true. Having debt is a part of millions of peoples reality and it does not mean living beyond your means. In my situation it meant having bad things happen to me. One such case is me losing my medical insurance and having to wait to get it back (another 3 months) so what this means is that tomorrow I will have to use my Credit Card when I go to the dentist. Not something I wish to do, but better that than not going at all. But whenever I use it these days I always pay it back by the end of the month.

I know the diff between wants and needs. However I have had some unfortunate things happen, one of which was losing my medical insurance and I have to wait 3 more months to get it back. What this means is during the meantime I have to use my Credit Card if I do not have the funds to cover the visit, as the one tomorrow I do not. However I plan to pay it back the first month.

Rom 13:8 (NIV) Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.

Rom 13:8 (ESV) Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

You refrain from going into more debt until your debts are paid.

I agree with Matt, Bob and Ann.

Aged man is way off.

Sunday is the Lord's Day and it should be honored if possible.

But the Friday night thing is not as important as paying off your debt. Scripture says "The borrower is slave to the lender."

Get out from under slavery- THEN you are free to do what you will in this situation.

The reason you are not free right now is because you have enslaved yourself to a lender. Deliver yourself from him as the bird from the snare.

If you can get another job and do that while enjoying this fellowship- great. But have the job lined up before you quit the one you have. You owe the lender that much.

Aged Man is wrong.

You are right on the Lord's Day issue.

But you are wrong on the thing about not owing any man; instead you owe a bank.

Banks loan PEOPLE'S money. Banks don't print their own money. Owing a bank makes you just as obligated as if you owed an individual.

But, as you said, you are paying your debts, so I commend you and encourage you to keep it up.

Thanks.. Yes I agree and thanks for showing my irresponsibility. Not all my debt is due to lifestyle or overspending, but due to unfortunate events such as medical bills without insurance, car issues, and such. My old car's engine blew a year ago and I was without a car. Ramsey would say to look for a beater, but I did not want to end up in the same situation as before, nor did I wish to go into deep debt. So what I ended up doing was buying a 3K car and I had to take on a small car loan, but I transferred that to a Credit Card to save money which I am still trying to pay off. However I own the car title and the car IS MUCH MUCH more reliable. Many told me to just go buy a new car, and Ramsey types would tell me to buy a beater. But I chose the balanced approach and I believe the Lord blessed it.

Thank you. One needs to harmonize Romans 13:8 with other passages. The NIV says "let no debt remain outstanding" and this implies that I continue to pay on debts. In our day and age its almost impossible not to have debts. Do any of you own houses? I will not buy a house until I settle with a woman and we combine incomes.

I am trying to save all that I can, and once my savings gets to $2500 or so (another $500 left to go) I will start making larger payments to my credit cards. The goal is to have a backup fund so that I will not need to rely on credit cards.

You need to read Romans 13:8 in a more updated translation such as the NIV or ESV.
