    This from facebook:

I saw on C-SPAN2 the author James Wright. I have never heard of him, but he wrote a book, called "Thoses who have borne the battle". I was moved by one comment he made. I will get it as close as I remember. He said, "there is alot of talk in the Public forum today, in protests, about the 99%, of the public who support the 1%, the wealthy". But there is a 1% of the public that no one talks about, ...and that is, the 1%, maybe less than 1%, of the young men and women who choose serve there country". I was curious about the math he used. It appears that there is approximately 2.8 million service members (Active and reserve). In Mid-2011, there was approximately 310,000,000 people in the USA. I saw he was right. " It makes me proud, to say, "I AM A 1%er" We are the 1% that make, and have made it possible, for the 99% to speak there mind. Thank you, all of you, who have served, who currently serve, and who are waiting to serve. WE ARE THE 1%! Pass this along to all the 1%ers you know.

First, The US has not had a "righteous" war since 1946. Korea was questionable and still not has been settled.

Second, I agree that enlistees sign on for righteous and honorable reasons but no more so than German, Japanese, Russian . . . enlistees.

Third, I think the patriotic 1% has been duped by the economic 1%.

    Agreed.

And it still bothers me how Evangelicals are so enthusiastic about every war that comes along.

I have to say that I am not a pacifist because I believe we have a right to defend ourselves.

But what do we do with these verses: Matthew 5: 38-48?

Did Jesus just set a standard that we should work toward but cannot ever perfectly meet?

When you make exaggerated statements because you disagree with others then you lose credibility. Your point can be made just as strongly using accurate characterizations rather than hyper-statements.

Wow, derailed on the first reply! That has to be some kind of record.

I've already stated my opinion on the German/Russion/Japanese enlistees, but for the record, I will state it here again. I can easily salute the brave men who fought and died for their country. I applaud their bravery, even if they were on the wrong side. They were doing what they thought was right, and were willing to die for it. How many people can say that today? Not just in the military, but for any cause?

It bothers me a lot this "new' strife in Syria.....what's with the Arab nations? Why does the good ol' UN and ultimately the USA get embroiled in this wastage of human resources....every soldier has a family mostly, spends squillions of dollars on ultimately nations who seem hell bent on destroying Western civilisation. I KNOW the West is corrupt and pretty unjust, but I for one do not want to replaced by a Muslim civilisation.

Hey there Sapper Woody.....run into any Kiwi or Aussie soldiers in your neck of the woods?

    >Was the Revolutiion of 1776 a "righteous" war.

    No.

    >Was the War of Northern Aggression of 1861 a "righteous" war?

Maybe. Is there any truth in the Declaration of Independence? Does the Declaration of Independence countermand the Bible?

The Confederacy was stupid for not letting the North fire the first shot.

I think the world would be safer if only combat vets were permitted to vote.

Did you watch the film adaption of Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers"....only folk who served in the military could become citizens and of course have a vote (though that is not evident in the Neo-Fascist regime).

I agree that it would be safer. I understand, however, that that would be infringing upon the rights of many people. The whole reason we fought for independence was the phrase "No taxation without representation". Taking away someone's vote would mean that they would hav eno voice in who represented them, and so the politicians would eventually quit caring about them, and they'd have no representation.

Sidenote: I agree with the statement, "No taxation without representation". Conversely, I also wish we could implement, "No representation without taxation."

Briony-Gloria: I see Aussies on a daily basis out here. Don't have much interaction with them, but see them a lot. Not sure who the Kiwis are, though.

    (bold my emphasis)

Not exactly - the taxation thing was about the 17th item of some 35 issues listed in the Declaration of Independence.

Ok, it's possible I stepped out of line with an inaccurate statement. Let me restate: "One of the most important reasons (imo)..."

Most people want to live in a country where there is peace, order, stability, and work that provides life time economic security. The appearance of "my fair share and just a little bit of yours."
