Baptist Persecution in Virginia, 1700's

I just learned something. President Madison thought Baptists were discriminated against or somehow persecuted in Virginia, and that Philadelphia had comparative religious freedom.

Yes, and Madison, Episcopalian though he was, supported the Baptists and others in favor of religious freedom.

Of course Baptists and others were persecuted in Virginia because the Anglican Church was the state church of Virginia. Pennsylvania, on the other hand, being founded by William Penn and the Quakers, gave religious freedom to all.
