Beaten with many stripes

Now i know we are Baptists and all believe in once saved always saved :)

Luke 12-46:The Lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him,and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in asunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

Luke 12-47:And that servant which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

Now these are surely the Lord's servants in this story and those in the first verse that were not looking were appointed their portion with the unbelievers.

And the same servants as verse 1 was also to be beaten with many stripes.
Now Just what is the portion with the unbelievers-is it hell?
And if its hell-are the lord's servants gonna be beat with many stripes in hell?

some questions to be answered i do believe :)

Parables tell/illustrate a major point, intjhis story, jesus was explaining that we need to be faithful to what God has entrusted towards us for His glory, NOT a treatise against loss of ones salvation!

[42]*And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? [43]*Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. [44]*Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. [45]*But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, [46]*the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. [47]*And that servant who knew his master's will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. [48]*But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

(Luke 12:42-48 ESV)

In order to understand this parable go to the end of the previous chapter:

[53]*As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, [54]*lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say.
(Luke 11:53-54 ESV)

The Pharisees were present when Jesus told the parable in vs. 42-48. In fact, Jesus warned against the teachings of the Pharisees in vs. 1:

[12:1]*In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
(Luke 12:1 ESV)

The parable you referenced is a contrast between the unfaithful servant (the Pharisees) and followers of Christ. In fact, look at what Peter asked in verse 41:

[41]*Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?”
(Luke 12:41 ESV)

Jesus did not answer Peter directly. Instead He answered with a parable. That makes the contrast all the more striking. The unfaithful servant is the Pharisees, whereas the faithful servant are those like Peter - disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore this passage is not about eternal security.

I already explained in this in my previous post. The unfaithful servant in the parables was the Pharisees. The purpose of the parable was to compare the difference between the unfaithfulness of the Pharisees and the faithfulness of the disciples.

very good Exegesis!

Would say that shows that one should NEVER base doctrines off mainly parables, use the entire revelation of God instead!

Weren't you just pointing out in another thread that the rich man was not really in torment in hell because it was in a parable? If so, should we not apply the same logic here and assume the stripes are part of the story, but not applied to real people?

well in that time when the body dies the SOUL also died--so yes that place was not real because there is NO remembrance in DEATH as the scripture says--it was a parable--and i was asking a question in the beaten with stripes topic :)

I think 12strings was suggesting that you want to play both sides of the issue when it comes to understanding parables. Your approach to interpreting scripture seems to be a moving target.

If the soul dies with the Body, what part of Paul longed to die and be with the Lord?

i also believe AD 70 the resurrection from the dead happened--and from that time there is no DEATH it was destroyed so therefore now and from ad 70 SOUL does not die anymore only body.

When did Jesus usher in the Millinium reigning than?

When did the graves open up and bodies arose?

When did the Angels and the saints return with Him?

When was the Great White Throne Judgement?

Since jesus ewas raised in SAME body he died in, now glorified, and He is the first of many, and we are to be as He is body wise when he returns...

WHY would we nOT get glorified physical bodies as he now has?

No rememberance in death? Are we all gonna say "huh?" when awards are given? How did the martyrs in Revelation seem to remember their deaths in hope of being avenged?
