Or drinking coffee. After all, caffeine is a physiologically-altering drug that can be addictive. Why? Because it is considered socially acceptable.

Ok - Grabbed my Thompson Chain Bible and honestly, I just don't understand how this things works. The other verses that they list in the "chain" speak of food - some spiritual and some physical. Remember that the chain notes are not Scripture.

I do not see support within the context of verse 6 that it is just spiritual. Is God going to swallow up death just spiritually and not physically? That is just two verses down.

I did find a great use for alcohol. Vodka, to be specific.
I had mold in one of the bathrooms and needed to make vanilla anyhow. Perfect!
Got the vanilla going, cleaned the mold, saw how great it worked, and said "HMMM!" Tried it on the mirrors. Beautiful! Tried it on the stainless steel faucets. Beautiful! Tried it on the tubs and the sinks, where there were some rust stains from the bottom of shaving cream containers and it with pretty minimal effort, it came right off.
It also did great on the shower wall.
The alcohol content is high enough to also dry fast, but not as fast as plain alcohol, which dries TOO fast, so it was perfect. It had little odor and dried with no odor.

After seeing what it could do, why would I ever want alcohol in that high of a level in my body? I don't. YIKES! I understand the stomach is highly acidic, but anything that rips apart lime scale and rust that fast is not something that sounds like a good idea for human consumption by way of drinking it as is.

A bit of beer in Irish stew - may be pushing it, but I tried it once and it gave it a decent flavor, though I hated that just a bit made the whole house smell like we drink, when we don't. I doubt I'll try it again just so the wrong idea doesn't get spread around. Then again, maybe the smell is ridiculously obvious to me since I don't smell it often. To me, it reeked up everything and smelled like skunk cabbage. That's NOT nice! I've always thought that when I came across the smell of beer and don't get why people would want to drink it after smelling it. That smell has to be some type of warning built into our systems 'cause BLECH!

The "best aged wine" sounds like a literal phrase to me.

    <snip>

Yes, we get it. The question was whether or not a Baptist pastor should be allowed to drink it, i.e. is it a sin to drink alcohol.

When I was in the Navy, I got to meet some British sailors. They made fun of us because we didn't have beer on board. They got beer with their meals. Of course, we knocked back a lot of joe.

The Scriptural position on alcohol is much deeper & varied than "thou shalt not...". God has given us guidelines for the proper purpose of alcohol, and He has given us warnings for its misuse. It is just as wrong to impose an unScriptural standard on others as it is to overindulge in alcohol or food. Alcohol has legitimate uses as a digestive aid, an anti-depressant, and as a mood enhancer. One person's weakness is not a license to limit the spiritual freedom of others. Read the following verses, look up the Hebrew words for "wine" in these texts, and let us conform our doctrine to the Word of God.

Refers to freshly squeezed grape juice:
All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the firstfruits of them which they shall offer unto the LORD, them have I given thee. (Numbers 18:12)

And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee. (Deuteronomy 7:13)

That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. (Deuteronomy 11:14)

    Refers to fermented wine:
And the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering shalt thou prepare with the burnt offering or sacrifice, for one lamb. Or for a ram, thou shalt prepare for a meat offering two tenth deals of flour mingled with the third part of an hin of oil. And for a drink offering thou shalt offer the third part of an hin of wine, for a sweet savour unto the LORD. (Numbers 15:5-7)

Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works. (Ecc 9:7)

Thou hast shewed thy people hard things: thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment. (Psalm 60:3)

He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart. (Psalm 104:14-15)

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. (Proverbs 31:4-7)

One other thing. If anyone is tempted to launch into personal attacks of "liberalism" or a desire to be "drunken", keep it to yourself. I'm not interested in arguing against ignorant & immature accusations.

I'd say that sounds reasonable, as long as you don't add a large order of fries to it, too. :)

Does anyone attend a Baptist church for Wednesday night supper and in the drink section, among other choices, have the choice of your favorite alcoholic beverage?

Not at my church, but the church at Corinthians had one:

1 Cor 11: 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, 21 for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk. 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? [NIV]

Why would you suppose the church at Corinthians did but not our Baptist churches?

Because drinking wine was an everyday part of their culture and it's not in ours. It could be that churches in France or Italy do this, not sure.

What do you suppose the reason is behind why it's not an everyday part of our Baptist church culture?

Ummm...because it would be wrong for the church to serve alcohol and then sent folks into their cars to drive their families home?

"Do you not have homes to eat and drink in?" 1 Cor 11:22

Why don't we quit the Q&A and you simply state your point?

Why not? Restaurants and other gatherings do it on a daily basis. Keep in mind the emphasis here is the theme of this thread and that we are enjoying a drink and not filling ourselves with drink. With this in mind, sending folks into their cars to drive is a non-issue.

Really? Serving alcohol and then having folks drive home is NOT a tacit approval of drinking and driving? Is the church going to carry liability insurance? Is someone at the church going to observe and regulate how many drinks a person has?

    Please, just state your point.
