Featured The Version I Use

I use a variety of translations and paraphrases on a consistent basis, as well as the Greek and Hebrew texts when I need clarification.

For the New Testament, I primarily use the NASB, NRSV, The Message, and the ESV.

For the Old Testament, I primarily use the TNIV, NRSV, The Message, and the ESV.

I have a friend who is working on an update of the ERV, and I've started using that translation to try it out. It is pretty good.

 

King James Version. Why mess with the best?
There are a few words that are no longer in
use anywhere in the world, but after learning
those, it's no problem with a little help from

Except for the KJV, I have not read from any of those versions listed for quite some time (but I have read them all). Currently I am reading the Power New Testament - 3rd Ed. (Morford, 1st Ed. in 1998). This NT was bonded with an OT text under the title One New Man Bible (2011).

When I finish it this weekend I next plan to read Weymouth's NT (1903). On Sundays, I usually carry a KJV but occasionally my NET [consider it added to the list]. So, which is my primary Bible?

 

Geneva Bible, baby! No better translation! Older than the KJV revisions with more accurate wording. Although I use both in church.

 

Agreed, which is why I chose other. I use ESV at church as that is what my pastor uses, and prefer hcsb and nlt at home. I pick a different translation each year to focus on. Ive read through the kjv, nkjv, niv, nlt, nltse, hcsb, esv and ncv (new testament)

 

How do you all think the ESV compares to the NIV for a study Bible? This is a serious straight forward question not meant to start a debate. I study with a NIV and have been thinking of buying an ESV. Or, have you come to the conclusion that another version is better?

 

In answer to the op, I use the ABKJ, anything but King James.

I guess you use anything in the "box car letter size", seeing that in your olden age, your eyes are starting to lose their sparkle.....

 

Would say that IF one wanted to go the esv route, better to just get a nasb, as more lietral, and if one wantsto stay inNiv vein, recommend the HCSB, as it is also a mediating version, but seems more literal,and not into the gender bias issues!

 

Are you suggesting that the NIV is into "gender bias"? If that is your take,that is absurd.

 

I use the Holman Christian Standard Bible (which takes a lot to say when preaching) and think it translates well. I disagree that it is a "mediating" version, but I guess if it was going to be SBC it had to make something up to be unique.

Like Dr Bob, I usually translate a passage independent a version and will often give my version when exegeting the text. The NET has been a happy supplement too. I like having specialists in specific books do the translating while also allowing them to add footnotes to "show their work."

It is indeed a mediating version,but the SBC did not come up with that description.

 

The ESV isn't as easy to read as the NIV, IMO. It is an easier read than the NASB though.

With all the ESV, KJV, NASB and IMO's, I feel like I'm reading a teenagers text messages. :laugh: On that note KJV for me.

it is MUCH more into gender translation than the Nasb/Nkjv , or eventhe HCSB versions, correct?
