Steaver, the pope was not advocating good works are what saves. I think Jimmy Akin's article explains what the pope was actually talking about in his article in The Catholic Register. It isn't that long of an article, so I won't try to summarize it.

People on this board have been assuming that the pope was talking about atheists being saved. He was not. What he's saying 'is that even atheists need to do good on earth to build their part of the culture of encounter that promotes peace and allows people to "meet together" in harmony'.
I read this reinterpretation of The Popes words and it just does not fly.
"Jimmy" says that human beings can be called "children of God" in many senses. However, the sense the Pope includes "Atheists" as children of God is not only "likeness" but redemption by blood of Christ. It is one thing to say they have POTENTIAL to become the children of God by the blood of Christ and quite another thing to declare them to be already a child of God by the blood of Christ Indeed, his first application to Atheists is not "image" but children by the blood of Christ and I quote:
"‘Father, the atheists?’ Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class! We are created children in the likeness of God and the Blood of Christ has redeemed us all! And we all have a duty to do good."
Second, he claims that due to being created in the likeness of God that all men equally have the potential to do "good" that is acceptable to God. Christ flatly contradicts that. He first denies that any Jew kept the Law:
Jn. 7:19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
Mt. 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God:
Paul repeated the same thing "there is none good, no, not one" - Rom. 3:10
The fact is that the moral image that provided ability to do good was defiled by the fall and can only be restored by new birth and Atheists and other unbelievers in Christ have no such capacity for several reasons.
Col. 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
Eph. 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Jesus plainly said the tree must first be made good before it can have good fruit. Jesus plainly said a corrupt tree cannot bring forth good fruit.
The London Baptist Confession of Faith gives the best explanation why lost people cannot do "good" works in God's sight:
7. Works done by unregenerate men, although for the matter of them they may be things which God commands, and of good use both to themselves and others; yet because they proceed not from a heart purified by faith, nor are done in a right manner according to the word, nor to a right end, the glory of God, they are therefore sinful, and cannot please God, nor make a man meet to receive grace from God, and yet their neglect of them is more sinful and displeasing to God.
( 2 Kings 10:30; 1 Kings 21:27, 29; Genesis 4:5; Hebrews 11:4, 6; 1 Corinthians 13:1; Matthew 6:2, 5; Amos 5:21, 22; Romans 9:16; Titus 3:5; Job 21:14, 15; Matthew 25:41-43 )
At best the Pope is ignorant of Scripture and at worst he is a heretic.
