Todd Burpo, author of "Heaven Is For Real," states that his son Colton can read the book and see if he is exaggerating or not.

    My questions...

Since the Bible contradicts what Todd Burpo is teaching in his book, would you join his Church?

Would you join any Church whose pastor wrote a book that clearly contradicted the Word of God?

Would you leave the Church that you are a member of if your pastor wrote a book that clearly contradicted the Word of God?

No, No, but will put a different spin on the last question. I would call a business meeting to vote said pastor out.

What if you called and got a busy signal? put on hold? told you were the non-elect and don't have a choice in the matter? told to repent of the canary and parrot fiascos first? told to jump in the ocean and fly a kite? :D

    I have read the book.

What do you find contradicting Scriptures?

I am not certain what exactly you would take issue?

With the "out of body" experience? Paul states that he knew someone who had a similar experience.

With the account of what the child related? Perhaps as you stated the author is correct - the book can be refuted by the child, maybe someday it will, maybe not.

Perhaps there is another issue that you would point as extra or unbiblical as a reason for your OP.

    However, to answer your questions.

I would not join an assembly in which the leadership was questionable in conduct, in family, in the way they handled Scriptures.

I have left assemblies were the leadership was/became questionable in conduct, in family, in the way they handled Scriptures.

I have separated from endorsing those that have been shown that their leadership was questionable in conduct, in family, in the way they handled Scriptures.

The focus on the boy for one, angels singing to the boy for two and wings for three.

    Most everything with the book?

It was not similar and he was not allowed to speak of it. Why was Paul not to speak of it but a child was?

Because this kind of squishy theology is invading the church.

Do you accept the Biblical writings of Daniel, and Ezekiel?
Ezekiel 1:11 Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each had two touching another being, and two covering their bodies.
Your rendering of 2 Corinthians 12 is a bit faulty. Paul and the man could speak of the experience - what they saw was "indescribable."
2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a man was caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I know how such a man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows— 4 was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak.

The "tentacles" of squid type theology is certainly reaching into all areas of the modern church methods.

Sound doctrine is getting harder and harder to find amongst all the bling and glamor of what some pass off as acceptable worship.

Wonderful - but that is not angels. Neither is it the dead people.

Interesting. You say "the man could speak of the experience" yet Paul himself says "which a man is not permitted to speak". So which is it? I say Paul said that he was not allowed to speak of it.

Yep. Solid teaching, solid worship, solid theology is sorely lacking from many churches today.

While I agree with your interpretation, it is very possible (and was taught by many throughout the history of the church) that the Seraaphim were a type or category of angels. I don't necessarily agree, but I would not leave a church because of the Pastor believing that...it is an extremely small matter, compared to the horrific heresy that has gripped the church.

So in answer to the OP; If a pastor I was under, was CLEARLY teaching heresy contradictory to the scriptures teaching on the GOSPEL (not if he disagreed with me on what Seraphim are, or whether women should wear head coverings, or some other secondary doctrine), I would not only confront him, but I would do it as soon as the words left his mouth. If it was unclear, I would ask him for clarification after his message, and if I was convinced of his heresy, and was unable to change his mind, I would call him before the church and seek his removal. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES would I leave the church. I would stand up during the service if I had to, to decry his heresy. I would stand outside and warn my brothers and sisters as they entered and exited if they kicked me out.

But secondary doctrine like this? No, I would debate, discuss, but ultimately agree to disagree.

He said that his grandfather had wings as does everyone else who goes to heaven. We are not even speaking of angels.

Isaiah would agree with the child:
28 Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
    His understanding is inscrutable.
29 He gives strength to the weary,
And to him who lacks might He increases power.
30 Though youths grow weary and tired,
And vigorous young men stumble badly,
31 Yet those who wait for the Lord
    Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.

I not only want the wings, I want the eyes that are not growing weary with cataracts, limbs that don't hurt even when I don't move, intellect that doesn't fail for words, and I won't mention the other parts that refuse to cooperate.

    :)

Yeah, this is horrible exegesis....but again, not primary doctrine, or even second level doctrine, so I would not separate based on it.

Yeah, I know, but if Isaiah can claim he saw wings, why can't a child?

Besides, my wife has been "clipping my wings" from our courting days. :)
