Enough of Dave Ramsey I am turning to John MacArthur on a theology of finances!

Mandatory tithing, promotion of Jon Acuff and other self-help authors, calling people "scum" on radio, fellowship with Rick Warren, a like of Joel Osteen, and teaching things that not even Crown Financial teaches such as an 100% attitude against having debt is something not found in scripture, with the exception of some KJVO's. The Bible teaches to pay all our debts, but does not teach we cannot have any debts! So I am turning to John MacArthur and have ordered this book.

Anyone read it? Mac loves the word and follows is closely. Ramsey has some Biblical principles and is quite entertaining to listen too, but I called Mac's church and they want nothing to do with him there, and probably because of the reasons I mentioned above. Thoughts?

I would encourage you to be careful not to narrow your circle of influence to strictly people who are reformed in theology. This will leave you with a myopic view of the world, it may leave you mean spirited and judgmental.

No one is perfect on their views. MacArthur is no better than Crown. Use them both and spit out the bones.

I also tune into these preachers and they are not reformed. But yes I see what you say Rev. MacArthur can be quite judgmental sometimes, so its wise to have balance. Lutzer was saying things on the podcast last night I know Mac would have hated to hear (such as accept Jesus as your savior with a prayer and not Lord). But Lutzer had more grace in his approach and I appreciated that.

No I am not talking about McArthur being judgmental. I listen and read McArthur myself.

Christians can have debt and still be Christian, but debt does make one a servant to the lender.

It looks as if you're heaping up teachers unto yourself to tell you otherwise.

Crown pushes to be financially secure. Debt goes against that. If you have debt then if something happens like you lose your job through lay off or injury, or the economy tanks then you have no way to pay your debts. The goals of Crown are:

1. Avoid credit card debt and use the money to pay off loans like cars and house much much sooner.

2. Have no debt and 6 months income in the bank

3. Have another account for emergencies

4. Have another source of retirement

5. Plan for holiday spending rather than put it on credit.

I have not bought a book in a while except this MacArthur one today and it cost me a total of $4.00 and that included shipping! Know I was also gonna buy a DVD series for $40 but the Lord convicted me of it, as that money needs to go towards debt and other expenses as I am unemployed at this time.

You don't need a book to tell you how to get out of debt. You use common sense. Eliminate all of the unnecessary expenses, like internet.
Start with your lowest debt and work to pay that off first (while still paying on your other debts). Then go to the next one. Only purchase things you absolutely must have. Do this until your debts are clear, no matter how long it takes.

Just saved you $4.

A library is quite useful! And if you want a book that the library doesn't have you can get an inter-library loan. So if that particular book is in the system somewhere in the 50 States -- you can get it withn a week or two usually. But the book has to have been published more than 6 months before your request.

Actually, its better to start with the card with the highest interest rate.

Can you show me where the Bible says that it is only when you reach 60% of your income is debt that you suddenly become a slave? Because the last I read the Bible, it just says "borrower is the slave of the lender". That could be $2 or $2,000. Doesn't matter. You are still a slave to them no matter WHAT percentage you owe.
