Providing references and citations

A recent thread on evangelism caused me to think about the practice of making a claim or accusation about/against a person or group without providing a convincing reference or citation. Often times these claims/accusations are made in order to point out a negative aspect of a position. But without a convincing proof such claims/accusations are not just poor scholarship, they strike close to the mark of making a false claim about another person and thereby violating the 9th commandment (bearing false witness). It would be better to remain silent than to make an unsubstantiated claim/accusation.

The ninth commandment is often violated as if it were only a suggestion and not a command of God.

Okay.

True Friendship is still the best means of evangelism

The rest of the chapter he goes on to explain his view, but not once does he mention using the LAW to convict, but he makes a good case for friendship evangelism.

Kent Hughes Disciplines of a Godly Man, pp. 207

Statistics indicate that ordinary Andrew relational evangelism is the most effective way to go.

He goes on to explain why he thinks this and the chapter seems to be all about Andrew friendship evangelism and he makes no reference to using the LAW to convict of sin, nor to address the conscience of the sinner. He is too fixated on results and not as fixated on the scripture and what it teaches.

Go put this in the thread you started. This thread is not about your "unbiblical evangelism" thread. It is about not providing references and citations (i.e. not backing up) when making an assertion about a person or group.
